D&D 3.X-multiclassing was one big failure.
Well, any sort of caster multiclassing was a failure. Barbarian/fighter combos, ranger/rogue combos, etc were actually pretty good. The real problem was always that while the mundane attack ability between classes stacked, the magic attack ability didn't.

Just so.
Prestige classes were sort of a fix for the problem of multiclassing; unfortunately, prestige classes weren't focused on trying to reconcile different class functions so much as changing or enhancing traditional class functioning. The randomness of the options available made it an awkward fix at best.
I would hope that they will utilize 4E's more closely-knit class abilities to somehow make multiclassing more viable, but I can't see how. Maybe hope will depend on the paths.

Completely agree. Fighter/Rogues were a great class combo!! But yeah, caster multiclassing was one big no no.

Well, the big issue is already addressed. Your ability to hit (in 3e, your spell DC) scales automatically because it's based on your level rather than your class level. Possibly damage as well, though I'm unconvinced so far. That fixes one of the big problems with 3e multiclassing. The only real limitations will be how the higher level powers compare with the lower. If they compare well, then picking up a multiclassed power is fine.

I saw this and the post about tomorrow being on Paths; where is this information coming from?

The information on Paragon Paths is from the Warlord excerpt, but Bart Caroll posted here last week indicating that their would be excerpts on paragon paths (4/23), multi-classing (4/30), and epic destinies (5/2).
