Prestige Class: Battle Master (Redux)

Raisyx

First Post
With prestige classes now on the horizon I am ready to stop lurking the forums, actually make something and post it.

This is more a proof a concept than anything else, but I have dissected and reformatted the Battlemaster archetype using the prestige skeleton.

Your challenge: build the most brokenly powerful combo you can WITHOUT taking any levels in Fighter. Prove to me this is either the best idea or the worst idea!

My own flavorful submission is a Warlord build:

  • 6 levels of Valor Bard
  • 9 levels of Rogue Mastermind
  • 5 levels of Battlemaster

First, welcome! I like the can of worms wizards and you've opened up. It'd be nice to see each subclass dissected into its essentials if only to be a reference for multiclassing. Thankfully my players don't read too much into power-gaming :-P

I haven't reviewed the prestige class framework in detail, but I am confused why you made this a level 3 prestige class and then have level 1 class features? Was this a mistake or am I missing something?

Yeah, you will want to read the prestige class rules from the new Unearthed Arcana first. It doesn't help that I named it the same as the pre-existing battlemaster but again, more proof of concept than anything else.

To clarify I have read them, I just haven't "reviewed" them, which to me is a more involved reading. That is why I asked about the disparity between your prestige class starting at 3rd (from UA) and having 1st level features (which I didn't remember from the UA article).

The UA article specifies you cannot take a prestige class as your first class, you must first have a combined level of 3 or higher depending on the prestige (the Runic Scribe example in the article required level 5).

As for why it has level 1 features, the prestige are their own class (again maybe it would be better if I had not used the default name the fighter archetype used) using the multi-class system and thus start at level 1 and get features every level.

Also I noticed I forgot to change the levels additional maneuvers are gained so I updated the original post's attachment.
