That might offend someone. Like if WoTC printed errata officially renaming Dwarves as vertically challenged individuals of short stature. Besides, no one commonly mistakes thieves for cosmetics on the boards.(rouge)
I know I'm the third commenting on it, but I can't help myself. The change of turning thieves into rogues is one of my absolute favourites among the improvements they made in D&D 3e.
Because it's not what they are. The rogue class isn't only for people who pick pockets. That's basically what a thief is. Rogues can also be scouts, spies, assassins, thugs, burglars, swindlers, con artists.
I remember my elven wizard/thief in 3e who never stole (didn't put any %'s into pick pocket) - he was more a scout or maybe spell-assassin. But of course I had to be extra cautious not to mention that I could walk around unnoticed, or I would be labelled THIEF. (OK, part of the problem whas the idiot players who were this prejudiced - and some of them, hopeless AD&D-Veterans they are, still act like that with the rogue class - but you shouldn't tempt people overmuch)
