Previews for Dragon 345

I guess I won't be supporting my FLGS anymore. Time for a subscription.

exactly....
$8.00/issue on the stand
$3.25/issue for a year
$3.12/issue for 2 years
$3.05/issue for 3 years
or month to month for $5.20/issue

or you can buy one book such as Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss for $29.95 or Tome of Magic: Pact, Shadow, and Truename Magic $39.95.

I'd rather have a subscription to Dragon and Dungeon and that is saying a lot since I love Tome of Magic and I am hungry for FC1.

I hope there're some non-Eberron giant articles in this magazine.

They focus on a Giant Theme with this one, but use Eberron stuff with it. How about just a pure Giant Theme magazine without the taint of other campaigns?

See, to make up for the Eberron content, maybe they need to do something on the Giants of Faerun, now that'd be something.

BTW, does anyone have the magazine yet so they can give us more depth on each article presented within?

I think Kostchtchie's Cult can be used in Forgotten Realms. It would be nice to see a few blurbs on the history in the FR. The cult could also be used in Eberron too. It would be nice to see planar suggestions for where to place Kostchtchie in Eberron (or Khyber or Xen'drik or wherever).

There are 30 years of resources on giants and we've had d20 supplements for the last 6 years. Material is usually more interesting to read if it takes place in a backdrop, even though it becomes more difficult to adapt (and thus sometimes less useful).

What exactly is it about this specific article with an Eberron backdrop that you don't like? Giant bane arrows made from giant teeth? I think that's pretty neat, and I can't wait to see what other ideas are presented.

At my FLGS, Dragon/Dungeon costs AUD15 (Australian dolllars) which equates to about 11 bucks and a nickel over your way. I have no problem paying this or a bit more if the current standard is maintained. I prefer to support the FLGS as they're good blokes ( :) SGC Sydney :D ). I suppose everyone has different thresholds, I'm a pretty loyal customer of both Paizo and the FLGS in this regard.

Best Regards

Is their anything preventing a FLGS from buying multiple subscritions, then selling them at standard markup? It would work out to close to half the newstand price.

Good for you. It just that the last time I bought $8 magazine issues are Star Trek: The Magazine, and they come in much thicker paper material than what Dragon is comprised, and offer more than two gatefold posters.

I've had a subscription for a long time myself and if it lapses because I find the magazine isn't 'hitting' the right spots for me anymore, I'm not buying it on the stand at that price. $7.00 was in my opinion, too expensive. Realities of publishing and everything I'm sure but like other things, there comes a time when you have to let your wallet decide what you can and cannot afford.

Yeah, but what's the alternative? If Paizo can't produce the magazine at a $7 cover price, they have four options I can see: 1) Cancel Dragon, 2) Reduce the amount of content of the magazine, by reducing page count or increasing the %age of adverts, 3) Increase the cover price, or 4) Reduce the quality, either of materials, or of content (by paying contributors less).

Unless I've missed an option, then that's what we're stuck with. So, which do we prefer?

What surprises me is the huge discount given to subscribers. I know that income the accountants can be sure of is worth more to them than potential income (effectively, they know they've 'sold' an issue to a subscriber, whereas on the stand they can only make predictions), but I'm surprised that it's that much more valuable.

(FWIW, my preferred solution: Increase the cover price to $10. Increase the page count to match. But then, I'm lucky enough to have plenty of disposable income.)

Yes, but you know those crazy Yankees. They whinge, bitch and moan about paying about half the price of petrol (aka gas) that the rest of the world pays and now they whinge, bitch and moan about paying less than the rest of us for Dungeon and Dragon. It's like 250 million people doing the Four Yorkshiremen sketch.... ;)
