Isn't that the sort of attitude that these ecology articles are supposed to address? I mean, the mooncalf was just a sort of uncompelling alien thingy too, but its ecology article was very interesting and evocative.

I don't know, is it? I get a lot more out of the recent(ish) articles on kobolds and behir, since those are monsters I actually want to use and can always use more flavor for. The Yrthak piece would have to contain the secrets of the universe to get me to use a flying sonar pteranodon thingy.

I always thought the Yrrthak would make a very neat mount, because the first thing I thought when seeing the Yrrthak would be having to fight off a bunch of Yrrthak rider marauders.

Same here, and I used them in that capacity as the mounts of some Rakshasa sorcerers in Acheron IMC. They worked rather well.

In fact, saying it once was how Fineous Fingers found himself in a cloud giants castle looking for Orcus' wand (in the FF collection). Be very, very careful about using demons & devils names.
