Pricey Book Question

Either way, the orginal point was that DanMcS would rather spend $10 on a specific small book than $40 on big general book. Maybe that wasn't his point but it was what I understood, and I agree with him.

Which is a perfectly legitimate point of view. I think where he got into trouble was when he started questioning the motives of the publisher because the book was not to his taste.

Yep. Apparently I was completely wrong about that, and I apologize. Thanks to the author for posting about how this book got so big, that was very informative.

I think DanMcS is in the difficult position of only wanting to buy the elephant's trunk. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just that Green Ronin is selling the whole elephant.

Now, they may or may not be able to come to a meeting of minds on this issue. (I can think of a couple of ways for GR to round up an elephant trunk for Dan, at least one of which should be profitable. But it's their business and not mine.) If they do, great. If not, that's okay.

But let's not get confused here. It's okay for Dan to only want an elephant trunk, and it's okay for Green Ronin to only make elephants. If the two end up not doing business because they want two different things, it's just a missed opportunity and not a Grand Conspiracy Against Customers and/or The Game Industry.

just trying to add some perspective,

It would be difficult to present the Holy Warrior without a pantheon. The skills, spells, titles, code of honor, and special abilities of the Holy Warrior are all specific to the deity. Sure, it would have been more economical to leave out the specifics. To just give one example, and leave the rest to the DM: add two skills, swap out X spells per level, and so on. But personally, I kind of feel cheated when that's done. It's a half-done job, like the Urban Ranger from Masters of the Wild. I'd much rather see a fully statted class.

It's like the Speciality Priests from 2E. How can you present a generic specialty priest class? You can, kind of, but it's probably better done the long way.

There's a good deal of crunch in the book, I might add. There are a lot of quality prestige classes in it, as well, that are specific to deities but not to clerics or holy characters. These are also very easily adaptable to any campaign.

If you just want a more customizable Paladin, I'd recommend Book of Hallowed Might, by Monte Cook.

Just last night I was thinking to myself that I have yet to buy a single book from Green Ronin that I disliked and this thread is making me want to give the Book of the Righteous another look myself. :)

Maybe I'll tell my wife that its what I want for GMs day. :D

Rules are fine but as I said, in role-playing games, rules are just the vehicles for the ideas. The best books IMO make you want to incorporate the ideas into your game and then, if necessary, give you the rules needed to do so.

:D

You, sir, are one fine person!

Thank you. :)

By the way, since I'm thinking about it, I've been meaning to tell you that I liked your Whispering Woodwind. I especially liked the way the NPCs were presented.

Thank you very much, Wicht! :)

I hope to be able to continue with that quality of material in future offerings. If you have the chance, I'd love it if you could toss a review up on the EN World site with your further observations and opinions on it. :)

(But we may be in danger of highjacking this thread if we're not careful, so...)

How does the price hold up for the page count and text density?

I wouldn't know. :D

You sent me a free copy way back when as a PDF download. :) I don't have a local gaming store so haven't actually seen it for sale. Whats the price?

I actually read it when you sent it for me and meant to write a review for you but about that time life got really busy and I never got a chance. I will see if I can't reread it here soon and write up a review for you. :)

'Overpriced' only applies to products or services that are not worth the price they are sold for. This book if anything is underpiced with all of the useful material inside. I agree with an earlier poster who said that this is what 3E should have started with in regards to deities.
