I'm wanting to get into PnP rpg's, and was wondering if the D20 system can be played by yourself? I only know one guy who would be remotely interested in pnp rpg's, so would I be able to play by myself?

Yes, but it's usually not quite as fun as playing with others. You might consider asking on the Gamers Seeking Gamers board to see if there are any games in your area that would accept a new player, or check out playing by post or e-mail.

While I'm sure you could find some way to play by yourself, I can't imagine it would be any fun.

This website host an incredable amount of Play by Post games. Where you play by posting your actions in a thread on this board. These tend to be slow, but fun. This allows you to play even if you don't have any local gamers.

If this is to slow for you another alternitive is gaming in a chatroom, This plays out closer to the real thing, but has the disadvanges of trying to find a game that's run at a time when your gonna be able to play.

Goodluck to you, I'll keep an eye on your thread becuase i'm thinking about starting an IRC game.

Ya know, this reminds me of back in the 1e days, I knew a guy who's entire gaming group played by rolling on the random dungeon and treasure tables in the back of the DMG. They'd play solo games this way, as well as "in group". The dice would say "2 Orcs" or whatever, they'd kill them, then roll on the treasure table. He bragged about his 127th Level thief all the time, and how bad he was. The first time he played in our group, he had no clue how to roleplay or interact with the NPC's or DM.

Having said all this, my advice is get on a Gamer Seeking Gamer list now, before it's too late!!!! :)

:) If you do start it any time soon, give me a shout :-D (that is if you're willing to take a beginner in). I have no idea how complicated it will be, so i'll order the book in tonight and see what happens. If I have a grasp of it before you start it, i'd love to play :-D.

I live in Edinburgh in Scotland, so I barely know many people who have even heard of pen and paper RPGs :(.

Neat, I've got a bunch of uncles, aunts, and cousins in Edinburgh.

I did a quick web search and found this site:

http://www.apocalypse.gen.nz/roleplayingclub/

... which is a role-playing game club that meets at a book store on Rose Street in Edinburgh, you might try getting in touch with them and seeing if you could sit in on a session. There's also a role-playing society at Edinburgh University:

http://www.eusa.ed.ac.uk/societies/geas/

Hope that's at least somewhat useful to you. Good luck!

If you have no luck finding people to play with in person, you can try Play By Post in the Gamers Seeking Gamers forums here, or try at www.rpol.net and www.playbyweb.com

Alternatively, if you want to play live but online, check out the "virtual tabletop" software at www.openrpg.com. I am part of a setting built around tabletop and openrpg caming called The 13 Kingdoms (http://www.enworld.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=69 for the forums).

But if you can find a few people locally to play with, that's ideal. Playing solo, while possible, probably won't be nearly as fun.
