Profession: Tanner

Tanners often formed a very distinct profession, known for a persistent stench of urine and rotting flesh. It was commonly relegated to social groups that didn't have much choice about their occupation.

Tanning is not really a portable job, A portable tanning kit would hold the tools to prepare the furs for transport, not to change them into leather. Skins need to be soaked for a while, so you would need to stay in one place for a while.

Making wearable furs, could be done on the trail, but the skin part should not get really wet, as it will rot after a while. It is NOT leather!

But expect the character to smell.....bad!!

good luck !

and they didn't live long. alot of the stuff they handled was very unhealthy. hazards of the trade.

plague (the name given to anything bad) was often associated with animal hides/furs

Chemical tanning use to use mercury, very bad. The term Mad Hatter came from treating felt.

Could make for an interesing character devolopment, player (unknown to player). DM to player, Oh, you can now 'rage' once a day....some time later...DM to player, Oh, you are now CE...some time later...DM to player, Oh, you are quite mad and the newest villian, given me you sheet. :)

You should really reconsider. Tanners were one of the very lowest-status jobs in medieval Europe; in India, tanners were untouchables. Unless you really like being inextricably associated with urine, this might merit some reconsideration.
