Profound sayings?

There's a lot of good ones in the movie Mystery Men. The Sphinx has a very formulaic cryptic saying: "If you do not X the Y, the Y will X you" or something...

Example: If you do not master your fear, your fear will master you.

He starts off with reasonable sounding ones but by the end they start to get a little out there...

OK, these aren't quite in the form you were looking for, but thought they might be useful under certain circumstances, oh and look at my second sig line as well.

"Most of the greatest evils that man has inflicted upon man have come through people feeling quite certain about something which, in fact, was false." - Bertrand Russell

"When I dare to be powerful-- to use my strength in the service of my
vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." - Audre Lorde

"It has yet to be proven that intelligence has any survival value." -- Arthur C. Clarke

"If you treat every situation as a life-and-death matter, you'll die a lot of times." -- Dean Smith

"It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them." -- Alfred Adler

"Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing."
- Robert E. Howard, The Tower of the Elephant.

(somebody has that one sig'd around here.)

"You are beyond popular, you are total lowest common denominator."
-Futurama

"Just because you are misunderstood does not mean you are an artist."
-Dunno where that come from.

"If you can't lay with the big dogs, get off the porch."
-My pal Vince K., cool guy and webmaster to the stars

Now for some of my wisdom:

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. If it doesn't want to drink, shoot the ungrateful SOB right between the eyes.

Simple truths from arguably the greatest mind of any age:

Poems and hums aren't things which you can get, they're things which get YOU. All you can do is to go where they can find you.

When you've been walking in the wind for miles. and you suddenly go into somebody's house, and he says, "Hallo! You're just in time for a little smackeral of something", and you are, then it's what I call a friendly day.

It's just the day for doing things.

If you stood on the bottom rail of a bridge, and leant over, and watched the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you would suddenly know everything that there is to be known.

How sad it is to be animal who has never had a bunch of Violets picked for him.

It isn't much good having anything exciting. if you can't share it with somebody. It's so much more friendly with two.

I was walking along, looking for somebody, and then suddenly I wasn't anymore.

We can't all, and some of us don't. That's all there is to it.

Nobody can be uncheered with a balloon.

No matter how bad things seem… nothing could be worse than being used as a towel rail.

When you go after honey with a balloon, the great thing is not to let the bees know you're coming.

Supposing a tree fell down when you were underneath it?….Supposing it didn't.

Although Eating Honey is a very good thing to do, there is a moment just before you begin to eat it which is better than when you are (Eating Honey).

When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain, and you Think of Things, you sometimes find that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.

Rabbit's clever, and he has Brain...I suppose, that that's why he never understands anything.

Everybody is really all right, that's what I think.

You beat me to it. My favorite movie of all times.

It's great if you can find it.

Also from that movie:

You can't step twice on the same piece of water.

From Space Quest IV (I think)
"Sometimes I talk to myself, but I find that I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know."

I had this ZEN-a-day calendar several years ago, and saved off some of the best. Unfortunately, I don't have them but some of them were really good.

My favorite: "The way to control your sheep or cow is to give them a large spacious meadow" - Shunryu Suzuki
