Pronounciation of Justiciar

I may be wrong, but didn't WotC or maybe TSR have some novels and at least one short story in Dragon with a character called the Justicar (without an 'i')? I remember reading one of the stories and seeing the novels at the bookstore, and could have sworn there was no 'i' in there. Of course, it's very possible I've misremembered it all this time. Anyone? I'm thinking the novel was "Return to"...something?

And I have to agree. Spelling and pronunciation are NOT matters of opinion. The English language is NOT a matter of opinion.

If I lived in any other English-speaking country besides the U.S., I would adapt to spelling it "colour." Because where I would be living, that IS the correct spelling.

Normally I'm a stickler too. Yes, it is incorrect. But players (and me) not snorting in derision trumps correct pronunciation for me.

I think I'm going with joost-i-car, rather than just-a-car, to try to head off those puns as well.

I kinda like 'justice-(er/ar)' as a pronunciation. One of the other threads had that one and was new to me .

At any rate, if you think of it less as 'tishy' and more as JUSTICE with some extra stuff on the end, it's probably easier to stomach.

Personally, I pronounce "justiciar" like "Patricia" but with a hint of an "r" sound at the end. Rolls off the tongue perfectly.

Really? "Just-a-car" sounds better to you? I mean--to each, his own, and all--but....wow.... You're leaving a whole syllable out...

The harder sound of Justicar gives it more of an edge that the other method lacks, which fits more with the authoritative figure it represents.

I'll ignore the rest of your veiled derision because your nick is taken from one of the most underappreciated bands ever.

I suffer no consequences from pronouncing how I wish except for being the target of nerd rage. Additionally, everyone around me will still know what I'm talking about.

I don't think I'm impugning the sanctity of the English language in doing so. I think you'd be better off persecuting the usage of phrases like 'where you at'', 'what you is thinking?.

1. You should look up revocation in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up aluminium. Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

This is from a few years ago, before the dictionary started including both "aluminium" and "aluminum", with the former listed as a chiefly British version of the latter. The latter didn't exist before us yanks decided to pronounce the word incorrectly. After time, it went into the dictionary. Now that it's in there, it's the correct version.

Just because a mistake was made years ago (and it stuck, until now) doesn't mean it should be abandoned. If that's really how you feel, it's pronounced "al-you-min-ee-um".
