I did remember that. That's why I started off by stating that he was indeed correct, that as a general rule, "one step away" means one step on either axis.Actually, I think Dragon-Rider was correct, you do have to remember that the alignment system is a biaxial system.
Then I pointed out that the rule for Improved Familiar is different, and quoted the rule, going so far as to boldface the key word "each" so it couldn't be missed. (But apparently you did so anyway.) Further, I quoted the example from the DMG, which tells us that a CG spellcaster can acquire a N familiar--an alignment difference of two steps (one on each axis).
