D&D 5E (2014) Psionic doubt

2E Psionics used Wisdom, Charisma, and Intelligence. It makes sense mechanically (giving Intelligence another spellcasting class) and thematically.

I think you mean Constitution, not Charisma.

To expand on that slightly: PSPs (like spell points) were largely based off of Wisdom, and then individual powers were based off of different attributes. I remember most of the body-shaping powers like Ectoplasmic Form and Body Weaponry were based off of Constitution; I am not sure but I think telepathic powers were based off of Wisdom and psychokinetic powers like Disintegrate/Detonate were based off of Intelligence; I am not sure about clairvoyant powers or metapsionic like Empower.

I sure would like to see metapsionic powers again like Split Personality. They were one of the things that made psionics feel very distinct.

WHOOPS!!! Suffered a severe case of the stupids:)

About half of the powers were Wis, IIRC. Psychokinetic and Psychoportation were mostly Int, and the metamorphosis devotion (can't bring the name to mind) was mostly Con. Telekinetic were almost all Wis. Metapsionic was kind of a mish-mash, depending on what seemed to make sense.

Because theirs really only one main INT caster. So they seem to be doing this to balance it out. Hell in 3.PF almost every attribute was used for manifesting at one point. Ah fun times ( No seriously the most fun I had with Pathfinder was just using Martial Initiators and Psionics. Most balanced and fun game I played in my admittedly few years.)

To add to the points made above, psionics in 1e used Int, Wis and Cha. In 4e, lots of psionics used Int. So it's hardly unprecedented. In fact, psionics not using Int would be the aberration.
