Psionics: great taste or better system?

I think the current psionics system is alright. I've grown to like the idea of the soulknife class, & I like the mirroring of the wizard & sorcerer ala the psion & wilder.

If (somehow) psionics becomes a core part of 4E, I'd sort of prefer either a feat/skill system or a slot-based system for relative ease of use (I really like how D&D, 3E+, has tried to streamline all of the systems into as few mechanics as possible; it's one of the things I didn't like about D&D before); I'd also like to see spell point & power power rules variants in the 4E DMG, though, as well as rules on differentiating magic from psionics (as well as differentiating arcane magic from divine magic).

I'd boil down the various spellcaster/psychic classes into just 3 simple classes: mage (arcane magic; using Intelligence); priest (divine magic; using Wisdom); and psychic (psionics; using Charisma). All of them would have 0-9 spell/power lists.

But that's just my insane ideas on the matter. :)

Levels and spell slots is cool, but I think there's some room to improve on "fire and forget".
Oh, yeah. I'd like to cast more spells per day, and get rid of the "very weak at low level" spells to "very godlike at high level" spells.

Personally, I prefer the skill-n-feat concept, with a dash of Mage (from White Wolf). And if you're concerned about limit, using a taxing system from Star Wars (only VP cost = Strain or nonlethal damage).
