Addressing the OP's question: I played a bard using the optional rule in the DMG to roll 1d20 instead of "taking 10" for spell DCs. I reasoned that bards roll perform checks all the time, so they sometimes sing well and sometimes not. If his magic is mostly based upon his singing, I figured it should have the same randomness. I enjoyed it (for the short time he lived). It was cool whenever he would roll high and be assured that his opponent could not save, and I felt more like the character had done something to beat the enemy, rather than just throwing out a save number. Rolling dice if fun, the more the better!
