I am going to do another mathematical analysis to show that psion does not get enough power points (I should really be using these skills on my research). This will be equivelent to my analysis that to turn a wizard into a sorceror you would need 47 feats.
At 20th level the psion gets 183 power points without bonuses from high ability scores. If we use the power costs for each power level (1st=1, 2nd=3, 3rd=5, etc., basically P=2l+1, where P is the power cost and l is the level of the power), we come up with 324 points for a wizard, 486 for a sorceror, and 144 for the bard (this was all done on Excel).
For bonus points, the average bonus points for a normal spellcasting/manifesting character range (10-23) at 20th level is 23 for a spellcaster and 14 for a psion. This was determined by adding the points at each ability score level (or converting and then adding for spellcasters) and then dividing by 7 for the number of 2 point ability score bins inside that range. Now ideally I should have multiplied each ability score by the probability of that score occuring to get a true average, but that will be later (after I get my stellar data analysis finished).
If we compare the bard and psychic warrior we get 129 vs. 167 (144 + 23), which I think is quite equitable as both classes are balanced against each other (though in my campaigns more people perfer the wuxia of the the psychic warrior to the support role of the bard).
However, very few people in my campaigns will play a psion and invariably multiclass with psychic warrior. To make the psion more attractive I recommend that they get more points. If we give the same ratio of points of the wizard vs. bard to the psion vs. psychic warrior this will give us 290 power points. If we use the bard vs. psychic warrior to the wizard vs. psion ratio we would give the psion 250 power points. In order to create an easy to discern pattern I have compromised at 265 points, so here is the table:
Level Pts/day
1 2
2 3
3 4
4 7
5 12
6 19
7 26
8 35
9 46
10 59
11 72
12 87
13 104
14 123
15 142
16 163
17 186
18 211
19 236
20 265
Now, I don't think it really matters that you can manifest a 1st level power 265 times per day or 183 times per day. That many times during a game is pretty moot.
Sincerely,
Sammy Grimes
