Psions don't get enough Power Points per day

I am going to do another mathematical analysis to show that psion does not get enough power points (I should really be using these skills on my research). This will be equivelent to my analysis that to turn a wizard into a sorceror you would need 47 feats.

At 20th level the psion gets 183 power points without bonuses from high ability scores. If we use the power costs for each power level (1st=1, 2nd=3, 3rd=5, etc., basically P=2l+1, where P is the power cost and l is the level of the power), we come up with 324 points for a wizard, 486 for a sorceror, and 144 for the bard (this was all done on Excel).

For bonus points, the average bonus points for a normal spellcasting/manifesting character range (10-23) at 20th level is 23 for a spellcaster and 14 for a psion. This was determined by adding the points at each ability score level (or converting and then adding for spellcasters) and then dividing by 7 for the number of 2 point ability score bins inside that range. Now ideally I should have multiplied each ability score by the probability of that score occuring to get a true average, but that will be later (after I get my stellar data analysis finished).

If we compare the bard and psychic warrior we get 129 vs. 167 (144 + 23), which I think is quite equitable as both classes are balanced against each other (though in my campaigns more people perfer the wuxia of the the psychic warrior to the support role of the bard).

However, very few people in my campaigns will play a psion and invariably multiclass with psychic warrior. To make the psion more attractive I recommend that they get more points. If we give the same ratio of points of the wizard vs. bard to the psion vs. psychic warrior this will give us 290 power points. If we use the bard vs. psychic warrior to the wizard vs. psion ratio we would give the psion 250 power points. In order to create an easy to discern pattern I have compromised at 265 points, so here is the table:

Level Pts/day
1 2
2 3
3 4
4 7
5 12
6 19
7 26
8 35
9 46
10 59
11 72
12 87
13 104
14 123
15 142
16 163
17 186
18 211
19 236
20 265

Now, I don't think it really matters that you can manifest a 1st level power 265 times per day or 183 times per day. That many times during a game is pretty moot.

Sincerely,

Just adding up numbers, you're right, however, the numbers are misleading. A 20th level wizard can cast, what, 4 + bonus spells 9th level spells/day. A 20th level psion can cast 10, easily, at 17 pp/ power. That flexibility is plenty to overcome the analysis that a psion has "fewer" points. At any given level, the most useful spells are generally the highest level ones, excepting a few low-level utility spells. A psion can cast his most useful spells again and again.

Edit: Also, if you really used P = 2L+1, you did it wrong, it's 2L-1.

The problem isn't with giving them more first level powers, its with giving them more 7th-9th level powers. The idea behind the psion is that they have even more versatility in their power usage than a sorcerer, but less choice in what they know. It works fine to me, I've seen several people (including myself) play psions.

Besides, we're only a couple months away from the 3.5 PsiHB, which promises to hold major changes for psionics.

It´s not the only problem with the psion class... I gave up trying to fix then, I hope that the expanded psionics handbook do this for me.

Ditto.

The problems with psionics are more extensive than giving out a few more PPs.

You could use the rules from Mindscapes, that give psions more PPs - rather similar to your table, actually. I won't type out the whole table, but they get 12 PP at 5th, 52 PP at 10th, 144 PP at 15th and 265 PP at 20th. If you like psionics, you should definitely get Mindscapes.

Hey, you proved that the bard needs more spells per day :D

Honestly, the psions I saw in game have never been underpowered. But I still hope for better 3.5 rules, especially many powers were poorly described.
