I haven't played them myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about the Advance Wars (both for the GBA and the DS - IIRC, the DS version is a port/upgrade of the GBA version, but I'm not 100% sure) - turn based strategy/tactical games. The art style is certainly Japanese, but it's not the overdone, horrifically deformed cutesy cartoony style.
I'm not sure where it would fit on your list of preferred game types, but Trauma Center: Under the Knife is a thing of beauty. I've played the Wii version, but the original DS version gets nothing but praise (well, and curses at its level of difficulty...) The only thing more fun than performing surgery on someone is performing *bad* surgery!
