As a DM, I mix published adventures with my own material. Sometimes I need a filler adventure, other times I need something to kick-start my imagination. I find published adventures work well in both scenarios.
As a player, I prefer home-crafted adventures. Most published adventures are too dungeon-heavy for my tastes. Also, the DMs that I know who run published adventures tend to run them right out of the box with no adjustment for the PCs (i.e. "plug and play"). I like to have adventures that involve my character on more than a superficial level.
