Does every non-d20 system discussion always devolve into why it isn't d20?

Were this another product like Cthulhu: Dark Ages, I would agree with you. But Pulp Cthulhu was originally announced back in 2002 as being specifically designed for the d20 CoC game.

"Takes seriously" is not the same as "widely loved" or "well known."

Agreed. Hybrid is a system that the community doesn't take seriously. I wouldn't put BRP in that boat.

In fact, if I had my druthers I'd play BRP fantasy instead of d20. But then, there's no generic BRP fantasy available right now.

Grab RQ2 (Runequest 2) from ebay or something and get playing ;)

For my money it was still the best FRP experience I've ever had as player and as DM. I even did a Dark Sun conversion for RQ2 and an Empire of the Petal Throne conversion for it.

When I get some time I'm going to do an Eberron version as well, because I think that will be fun.

Cheers

Ok, like I said, it was two years ago so I forgot some of the specifics (Carl, help me out here. :uhoh: ) It was based on the traditional percentile system and I do remember that there was a complete vehicle/chase system that was really cool. I know there were a couple of core differences from the traditional Cthulhu rules. I think there were some expanded luck and combat rules.

Sounds great - I might look out for this one

I may do that. But I was spoiled by the listing of a BRP core book as a "preorder" at Warehouse23... Not that that means anything. ;)

No matter how long it takes Chaosium to get the book out, I'll be waiting to grab it. Of course, it would be nice to get it sometime in this decade... :\

Carl

You think this is a long wait? You weren't waiting for Armies of Oblivion to be released by Multiman Publishing. THAT was a long wait.

I just checked my FLGS, and they have a copy of Stormbringer, the BRP game set in Moorcock's Elric universe. Would this be a good alternative? I don't mind filing the serial numbers off a bit. :)

I personally don't think so - Stormbringer was much closer to the BRP system, which I felt removed a lot of important and valuable rules, and introduced some newer ideas that I don't think worked as well. It's magic system wasn't nearly as flavourful and well balanced either.

Stormbringer is a great game. It is much simpler than RuneQuest (which is a great advantage), yet works very well to fantasy. Although it is BRP tailored to Moorcock's setting, it can be easily used with few adjustments in a generic fantasy setting. Magic is somewhat limited in the core book. The Bronze Grimoire adds a lot of new spells and the Unknown East adds freeform magic rules.

Alternatively, you can also use anything from RueQuest with little changes. In fact, you may want to go to mongoose site and get their runequest SRD.
