Pulp Heroes for d20 Modern

The advanced classes in the Poly Pulp heros article has decent saves, and they have improved the saves for the ACs that's in the Modern book as well.

I just posted about this. damn.

Anyhow. I just tried to translate 2 existing characters and it sucked.

I had a straight soldier and that was easy enough, 2 levels of tough hero.

But what about a scientist? whats he doing? Smart hero? that doesnt help him against killer nazi robots my friend!

I found it unpleasant to try and make characters for d20 pulp.

yuck.

The original system works far better. why not support it?

try making a Soldier/Gangster. Instead of 2 levels you got 5 or 6!

whats that all about? it is very upsetting.

anyhow, Im venting and whining. I apologize, its just a huge leap backwards a far as Im concerned.

word up.

To each his own.

What's the character concept for the soldier/gangster? A tough guy for the mob or something like that? Well, I'd say take criminal for your occupation and then use the plentiful bonus feats from the d20 Modern base classes to model the character you have in mind.

I figure a few levels in Smart Hero would actually do a lot of good in against the Nazi hordes. Talents like Savant and Plan, for example. Maybe as a compromise a GM could let the Smart Hero swap a few discoveries for his Smart Hero talents.

But again...to each his own.

I was looking into an advanced class for Pulp Hero's Repulped (sorry Geoff :))called the "Playboy". Archtype wise thing of Nick Charles without being a detictive sort of a wo/man about town, here's the prereq. and I have so far....

Cha- +13

Skills: Bluff-6, diplomancy-4, Knowledge( pop culture)-6

Feats: Windfall

Figured contacts and 2 bonas feats + ??? for spiecial abilities, since this is a work in progress is there anything I should add ?

I'm running a Pulp Parody one-shot some time in the next month or two. If I recall correctly, it was:

HERO-Force!

Dirk Lancer, Captain of HERO-Force
Rex Archer, cynical wisecracking sharpshooter and pilot
Virginia Dare, mysterious and beautiful redheaded martial artist
Tank McGinty, demolitions expert and good chum
Doc, the steady-handed field medic
and little Timmy Lancer, Dirk's 11-year-old nephew, who accompanies them on missions.

Dirk: Cha9/Soldier3
Rex: Fast3/Gunslinger9
Virginia: Fast1/Strong3/Martial Artist 8
Tank: Tough9/Strong3
Doc, Ded3/Medic9
Timmy, Smart5/Field Scientist 7

Dirk: HERO-Force, Roll Call!
Virginia: Honor!
Tank: Equality!
Doc: Respect!
Rex: Order!
Timmy: And I'm Timmy!

Together, they fight villains like Father Fitzpatrick, the Bombing Bishop (the Papal Pugilist, the Catholic Crusher, the Deacon of Doom, the Enervating Evangelist, etc.). He's got a bishop's crook that fires bolts of lightning, and "The Papal Bull", which is either a minotaur or a gorgon.

Or Granola McHippie, the Mad Liberal, who has formed an alliance with the Feminazi and Fabulous Franz and his Gay Agenda in order to activate the Homosexuality Beam, which has the devastating ability to turn almost 10% of America's population into people with much better fashion sense and a new show on Bravo. Fortunately, it's rumored that Timmy will use his 11-year-old genius brain to rewire the Homosexuality Beam so that it just makes everyone love baseball, apple pie, and the containment policy.

Note: We're only parodying pre-agreed-upon stereotypes, so that nobody in the group is offended. The Jewish person wanted us to avoid Jewish stereotypes, so it pretty much came down to Irishness, Catholicism, vegetarianism, and voting liberal.

Oh, I love Brass's people. It reminds me of some of Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton stuff, in which all of the pulp heroes coexist and are in many cases related to one another.

Wold Newton you say? Have to look into that.

Do not, DO NOT. It's like the graduate school of geekiness. It's a whirlpool, man, it'll suck away days on the web. I barely escaped with my life.

Crap, now I have to go google it again.

Exactly right. PJF is a madman...but even though he's an old man now, he's still thirteen at heart, and I love that.

Check out his Tarzan bio and his Doc Savage bio [both out of print].

I got a question for PULP HEROES gamer-fans. This is the first time I'm playing a Scientist. Let's say that I have two discoveries: Electricity (from Lightning Bolt spell) and Sonic (from Concussion power). From these, I created two weapons: A lightning pistol (the size of a tommy gun), and Concussion rifle (actually a cross between a smith's bellow, a harp, and a gatling gun ... with a Jamaican steel drum somewhere inside). Each have 50 uses/charges.

How do I determine the appropriate DC for my victim to roll their saving throws? Do I use my Scientist's Int modifier or the appropriate ability modifier based on the FX abilities (Lightning Bolt is Mage-based, therefore Int; Concussion is Con-based, therfore Con)?

Technically: DC = 10 + Discovery level + ability modifier(?)
