And a follow-up. For those of you that got it quickly ... was it the 3 letter word that gave it away, Hypersmurf's amazing luck, or is it really easy?

I am wondering if I had started with say ... RA's message for me specifically ... if it would have been more difficult.

I dunno, I'm pretty good at puzzles and ciphers... but even knowing the answer, I can't figure out WHY it's the answer... so I think you did something right, heh.

This example was pretty easy to solve. Hours of Wheel of Fortune have shown that in a situation like that, the three letters in the middle are likely to be "and" or "the".

Using the same cipher, but applying it to a different phrase could be much harder.

If you want to make it a little easier, give the players a visual cue. Place the letters of the alphabet as a border around the message, e.g.

Y                               K
         GGDV UJH SGDTJX

V   U   T   S   R   Q   P   O   N

It gives them something they can use to count.

Your 3 letter word (and Rystil's first 3 letter word) are the first two I'd check against. If the progression (to get from the cipher to the real word) is obvious, you've probably solved the puzzle.

Without those three letter words, it becomes a more laborious process... though it only takes a couple of minutes to write a program to do a lot of the work on the simple arithmetic progressions.
