PX2 reccomendations?

BiggusGeekus

That's Latin for "cool"
I gotta PX2 for Christmas!!! Woo-hoo! My first console ever! I also got a gift certificate at a local retail store so....

1) What games would you suggest? My wife is not a gamer but has expressed some curiosity about the games so suggestions for her are also appriciated ( violent female protagonists tend to be a hit with her).

2) What controlers would you suggest? I want at least one extra so I can play the games with my wife.

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

Final Fantasy X and X2 are great ones. You can't go wrong with any of the Best Sellers which are $20 or less.

I suggest the the standard Dual Shock Controller(the one you already have).

PX2, haven't heard of it before, is it by Xony?

Hmm, not sure about this. Though every fighting game ever made has female characters.

What ever you do though, avoid any Tomb Raider game. The first two were good, but are so old the graphics might induce a heart attack and the series went down hill after that, so far in fact that Eidos the series away from Core, the developer that created it in the first place.

As gariig said stick with the official Dual SHock 2 by Sony, not only is it the best controller for the PS2, but it's the best controller for any system.

Game suggestions, mostly old stuff because that's mostly all I have:
a fighting game (Capcom vs SNK 2 or Soul Calibur 2)

Ape Escape 2, a fun game with a low difficulty level which is good for someone new to gaming.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance, great gameplay, but a story that goes down hill halfway through

Onimusha, you play a samurai killing demons, what more do you need to know?

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, the newer ones may be a bit to hard for someone new to the series, so start here.

Castlevania Lament of Innocence, level design is uninspired, but it's still fun.

PS game that can't be missed:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, one of the best games ever.

I pretty sure there are some stinkers in there.

Well, what sort of games do you like? That might help us suggest some more suited to your and your wife's tastes.

Otherwise, I'd recommend renting a few games first and seeing what you do like, and then coming back here a couple of weeks from now and asking again, when you have a better idea what you would like. Suggesting games out of the blue is something I don't particularly like to do, because tastes differ so much.

You know, I was typing my response, and I hit Submit Reply, and realized I wanted to recommend Symphony of the Night as well, because it's such a good game.

I personally did not like Final Fantasy X2 even though I mostly enjoyed Final Fantasy X. X2 is very different in style and I disliked the new battle system. Yucky. But since your wife is also interested, It *may* be to her liking, especially if she likes J-Pop music.

If I could recommend only one RPG for PS2 I would tell you to get Kingdom Hearts. It's now one of the PS2 Greatest Hits so you can get it very cheap (I think it's $20 right?) It is by far my favorite RPG so far on PS2, and there are several sequels coming. So get on the Ball!

On controllers: I agree, the stanard Dual Shock 2 controllers (which come in a variety of colors, though I prefer the default 'black') are the best! If you want wireless there are several makes available but I have no experience with those.

Hope you enjoy your PS2, I know I have :)

Blech. I hated FFX and i'm sure i'd hate FFX2. It's a gorgeous game, there's little doubt, but good GOD... you just sit and watch cutscenes so much, it's like watching a poorly dubbed anime. I long for the days when you could just read what the characters said on the screen, and read it as fast as you wanted. If you want a solid Final Fantasy game for any PS system, go and look for Final Fantasy 7. It's a gorgeous game with an engaging story and a really cool magic system. FF8 angered me with it's stupid magic system, and i didn't much like the story either. FF9 I've been told I might like.

Definately check out Kingdom Hearts for a great mix of Final Fantasy, Disney, and Zelda. (And you can't beat the pricetag, either.)

Silent Hill 2 is very creepy, but the controls for combat suck majorly. Beyond that, a solid survival horror/puzzle game. More of a creepy puzzle game though.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: THIS GAME ROCKS MY FRIGGIN WORLD. BEST PURCHASE OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON SO FAR. AMAZING GRAPHICS, VERY COOL STORYLINE, AND CONTROLLING TIME ITSELF IS VERY COOL. Ahem. Sorry. Go rent this game and see if you like it. It's marvelously cool.

For a completely non-fantasy adventure related game (but still a damn good game that eric's grandmother would faint while watching) pick up Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. What other game lets you pick up prostitutes to heal your health, then run them over with your car to get your money back... :D

If you like Mortal Kombat games, check out Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. Great game, but my only complaint is that each character only has ONE fatality.

Tekken 4 is gorgeous and a good solid fighter.

Okay, I think that's about it.

Enjoy your PS2!! :D :)

I would recommend in addition to the growing list below Ico, a puzzle platformer. Definetly different tho slow paced.

Also, for an old school games ( I hate that term), Final Fantasy Chronicles and Anthology have been rereleased as a PS Greatest Hits titles. Chronicles is FF IV and Chrono Trigger, Anthology is FF V and FF VI. Altho straight ports of SNES games a great value at 20 bucks each-especially for Chrono trigger/FFIV.

I really really really like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Not at all like the PC game, but it definitely is a Baldur's Gate game. I'm in my third or fourth game of it, having beaten it twice already. Plus, Dark Alliance 2 is coming out soon (hopefully, they keep pushing it back), so the fun can continue! :D

If you thought the cutscenes were intrusive in FFX/X2, try playing Xenosaga for a few hours and you'll never think that way again. ;) Personally, I loved both games. X2 has a very low amount of cutscenes, BTW - and you can skip through the dialogue if you like by just reading the subtitles. All good.

BiggusGeekus - As for other suggestions, tastes vary so widely around here (as you know) that you may want to post some examples of games that you have liked in the past or games that looked cool to you.

I'll have to echo others who say try a few rentals first or hit the bargin bins. Best way not to waste money on something you may hate. Enjoy the system, it's got a ton of great games. You'll never find the time to play them all. ;)
