Q?: Irontooth encounter, how long did it take your group?

Plus, the Irontooth encounter is probably too high for a level 1 party to handle, being 5 levels above them (it's a level 6 encounter). In Ozzie's description above, I had scaled the encounter to level 6 for four level 2 characters. Out of the box, a level 5 encounter should really be the limit of what you throw at the group unless you want them to flee (or TPK for not having the sense to flee).

Having to face Irontooth from the start will REALLY make this encounter nasty--I would scale it to level 5 if that's the case. (I'd probably scale it to level 5 to begin with, but if you want to stick to the adventure as presented, at least have Irontooth's entry clock not begin till the fighting starts. He's the boss, he doesn't investigate every attack.)

For being a small group our class make up was pretty sound. The ranger, scored a critical on his daily ability which really knock irontooths and the wyrm priests health down. I pretty much used Scorch the entire night until i summoned a flame sphere, which allowed me to sit in the arcane circle of power and move him in the face of our attackers from a distance. It was the first night of our home brew campaign, and the way our DM runs his campaign, he didn't want to kill us on the first night of combat. He gets us to create lavish back stories for our characters that tie into the plot of his campaigns, so generally first night he throws us a mulligan if we are about to bite it.
