Q re: wizard 'per encounter' power

I saw the newly released character sheets from the DDXP event, and I was impressed with the 'at will' and 'per encounter' concepts, but the 'per day' ability really threw me. The wizard in the example provided had sleep as a "per day" ability.

Considering that sleep is pretty much the best 1st level combat spell, I can see why they elected to place it at the 1/day mark. My question is this, however:

a) Can a wizard make ANY spell a "per day" ability (for example, trading magic missile into the "per day" slot and putting sleep into the "at will" slot;

b) Does a wizard get more than one "per day" ability ever?

a) sounds ludicrous.

b) sounds unlikely. You may not have a hundred per-day powers at high levels, but I would think you get more than 1.

Can sleep be used outside of combat as a lullaby or is it a combat spell only?
Meh, if you want a lullaby sing one. :) Otherwise sleep is the spell you use to forcibly make someone collapse for a a couple of seconds while you get past them or kill them.

Sleep was extremely overpowered for both its combat and non-combat purposes(except against creatures it didn't work on).

Reading the blurbs about the spells, i thought maybe it was possible that given "per day" spells eventually become "per encounter" spells as a wizard goes up in level, and possibly eventually "at will".

In this fashion, sleep could be per day at levels 1 through 10, encounter at levels 11 through 20, and at will at levels 21 through 30.

Well this may sound silly but say you are asked to cure an insomniac little prince in order to be granted a king's audience. Will the sleep spell work? Or is it a case of "Honey I just slowed the baby"

Why would you want to put a different spell as a per day ability if you have it as a per encounter or at will ability? My guess is that they will have a list of spells to choose from that will be designed as per day abilities. The per day abilities will have the biggest bang for the buck. Per encounter abilities will be weaker and at will abilities the least powerful with each use.

I think they will. Do you think a 23rd level Wizard will only have a single per day ability? I seriously doubt it. I would think they would have maybe six or so different per day abilities by then. Each can only be used once per day, but if you end up in the huge fight against the BBEG, you will probably have several different per day abilities to throw at it, and will regret it if you blew them all fighting your way through its minions.

Pretty much "Honey I just slowed the baby".

Or you rest six hours between each encounter ;) ;)
