Considering that sleep is pretty much the best 1st level combat spell,

It was in 1e, but in 3e it was hamstrung into uselessness, and in 3.5e they nailed it into its coffin and put it 6ft under!

(1 full round casting time, affect up to 4HD of creatures if they fail their save?)

The new spell is much more powerful, guaranteed to have at least some effect on everyone you get with it, can affect targets of any HD or level... well worth a 1st level daily slot as the spell has the possibility of dramatically affecting the encounter in which you use it.

Cheers

Haha I wrote my sentence wrong. :P

What I meant to ask was, could you turn a "per day" power into an "at will" one, assuming you have some leeway into what slot goes where. But after reading this, it is ludicrous, and foo on me.

The idea isn't crazy. In fact, its been widely considered how 4e would do the "upgrade" of powers as your level increased.

But looking at the powers we've seen I don't think so. The spell sleeps seems to scale very well with level. No matter what creature your facing, you will at the very least slow it for a round. Never underestimate automatic effects. Further, it has no HD cap any more. I feel sleep will be a per day spell all the way, and a decently powerful one at any level.

I like the new sleep spell, but it is funny that my favourite spell on the wizards sheet was Light, because it was At-Will. I keep seeing Gandalf in Moria....
