Q. Rogue/Fighter Nudity?

Hi, all!

I've been following this topic since its start and I kept myself from expressing my opinion as it (the topic) shows a good potential for a flame war.

However, I am very disturbed by the reference to the "artists" of the book in a plural and general way. Regardless of topless falling into the classification of "bad taste", "light porn" or "commercial gimmick", I just wanted to state that I myself as an artist have never done any sexist pic and I have worked on both books of the Quintessential line. Due to a printing error, my name does not appear in the credits for the Quintessential Fighter (and Mongoose was very nice to apologize for that) but it does appear in The Quintessential Rogue.

I have also worked on books from many other companies like Pinnacle, Mystic Eye, Green Ronin, Living Imagination and those editors can attest to that.

If you want to check any piece of my artwork, please visit my website at: www.webspace.com.br/marciofiorito or at both Mongoose books by themselves (my signature is an "MF" at the bottom or side of the images).

Thus, I believe the plural reference to the "artists" should be reviewed as the pictures in question were all done by the same artist. I don't recall his name right now.

I know people don't always care about the artists names and saying that they think that they look down on the "artists" of the book in plural (even if MY artwork is not among the ones in question here) is illogical and unfair to say the least.

Thanks for the attention.

Sincerely,
Marcio Fiorito

To be fair, he said that it was one author that did it in both books, but he didn't specify which one.

I've only really been "offended" by one peice of art though. (by offended, I mean just looking at it and going "oh, great...garbage" when you look at it.)
The Everquest expanion for the wintery setting (Velios?) has a bunch of guys in furs amid the snowy land, as well as a bunch of girls in fur bikinis. I mean, really, it's snowing!

I used to get the impression with some Black Dog books also that the material was simply going for shock factor to cover a bad product, but JGK even says it's good material, so I don't think that's the subject here.

I don't have the book, and frankly, I wasn't interested in getting it even before I heard about this. Now, I might just go to the bookstore and mock it. It seems like Mongoose is just having this kind of art to appeal to lewd gamers and reinforce female stereotypes. I haven't seen the art, but it seems like it's presented as sexual. How many men are there in Mongoose's books that are flashing a gleaming smile, trying to woo all the women gamers out there.

I'll be honest, I never noticed the "obligatory bare-breasted woman" in the Mongoose books until it was pointed out. It's not on the cover and in your face like a certain other publisher, and I really can't imagine that anyone is buying the Quintessential books for the one or two naked pictures - come on, they're line drawings. They're about as erotic as the bare breasts in the 1e Monster Manual. Are you going to go and make fun of that, and Deities and Demigods as well?

I guess everyone has different lines that they draw.

Re: Q. Rogue Full Frontal Nudity?

What's up with the full frontal nudity on two of the female rogues in this book? I thought the one piece in Q. Fighter was bad enough but it looks like a growing trend. Leave the super cheesecake to Avalanche eh?

Just quoting myself here because people seem to be going way off base.

My request is to leave the t&a to Avalanche. I'm not bashing the art. I'm not saying the product itself is bad. I'm not saying that I'll never buy another Moongoose Product again.

I've already pointed out the frontal (not full though, my bad) nudity in two products by the same artist.

Just a refresher before people start accuse me of trying to slander a company, hating women, destroying free speech, or anyt other thing instead of just a plea to tone it down.

I mean there are so many things that could've went into this book for art that more t&a doesn't stike me as being necessary.

I don't know how things are in other places, but nudity and sex are part of our daily lives, why would it be 'bad' to display something like that in a RPG book? On the other hand killing, maiming and racial hatred are NOT part of our daily lives and yet we DO see that depicted in RPG books, isn't that strange...

First get your priorities straight before trying to 'enforce' your views on others. If you don't like something because it doesn't fit your viewpoint, don't buy it, or ifyou already have, burn it! Or better yet, take a marker and draw her some clothes ;-)

I'm not even comment on the distasteful compersion you made, really, really out of line...

Why put it down as ONLY artwork? Does the naked (female) form offend you in some way? Or is it just when it's artwork in a RPG book?

Well said!

I don't hear anyone complaining about the barebreasted barbarian (he's got niples too you know ;-)

So true. In fact, I was just waiting for someone to say this. :) The insecurity that north americans in general possess regarding their own bodies is mind boggling.

I object to the naked folks because there is no logical reason to include such depictions in a RPG supplement. It's the same thing I say about Avalanche's pointlessly gratutious cheesecake covers. Here in Minnesota, the latter doesn't sell very well and word's gotten out about the former.

If we want naked chicks, we'll buy porn.
