Even I cringe at the thought of that. It begs so many questions, like what were they collectively fighting for? How did they all get there with their detailed backgrounds? Didn't they have a choice to run away? What guarentee did the DM have the PCs would follow through, and what would happen if they didn't? DM is meant to give an experience and all, but it feels so many sorts of wrong, especially for a fresh DM. I hope the situation didn't kill to many hearts, especially the DM's.He wanted to start the campaign with a TPK that would lead into the main quest.
Least I can say that when my PCs were brought before Heironeous, it was from what they did, and not railroads. And they didn't have to do what Heironeous was asking, which is something I don't think they really got. Or ever will. A campaign arc they will sadly never come to understand or realize.
