"Quality" results for d20 difficulty checks

Is anyone implement quality-based results for difficulty checks?

In other words failing a DC by up to 5 might give a "poor" result rather than outright failure, succeeding by up to 5 might give a "good" result, and succeeding by 10 to 15 might give an "excellent" result. The key, of course, is defining what those mean for different types of checks and saving throws.

I've thought about it...

But really can you say you have partial degrees of faliure or success? Ok, I guess you could but hear me out. In high school you either failed or you passed (regardless of if you got a D or A) end of story.

I can see wanting to be more descriptive in your checks though.

Not all checks are like high school.

Sometimes you want degrees of success, sometimes you don't.

When you want them, taking the difference between the check and the DC is the most natural way of getting an estimate.

The picture I get is one of Homer Simpson building a bird house.

Basically I think the difference is a key to roleplaying the result.
