Quarter Dragon

So make the breath weapon d8/2 hd (total hd) of the creature. No max, once per day. That scales fairly well and is still at least somewhat useful through most levels. Plus the breath weapon is the only thing that really makes this guy a decent +1, might as well try to keep it without making him a worthless +2 ;)

Edit: or d8/3 hd, 1/day per point of con bonus. That would be even cooler, weak but can be used more than once in a blue moon.

I don't think that natural armor, a decent breath weapon, assignable stat bonuses, [Dragon] type immunities, and energy resistance would in any way be a "worthless +2". Its a heck of a lot more than you'll find in most +2 races out there.

That said though, I do like the idea of a scaling breath weapon. For half dragon it could be d8/2 hit dice, dropped to d8/4 hit dice for quarter dragon. I'd still leave it at 1/day though.

A class level is a big thing, being two levels behind and gaining a couple of stat boosts (nice, but not major, even to good stats), a breath weapon that quickly becomes obsolete (3d8 save for half? beyond level 5 or so it is never used except for effect), energy resistance 15 is nice but mainly just a beanie. You are mostly immune to that one, but there are 4 others which still hit you just as hard, and you are 2 full hd behind in hd at +2.

It is a really hard thing though, every campaign with adjust level adjustments differently. Give people a pile of abilities and ask them to give it a LA along with maybe racial hd and you'll probably get about as many different combinations as there are people. Hopefully everyone can agree at least slightly to some points ;)

I definately prefer more than once per day myself. It is fairly weak, but if it can be used multiple times then it is actually useful in more situations. Still mostly flavor (at d8/3 hd it wont be hurting things anywhere near your CR, especially when you are at a -1 hd to the party) but the character also doesnt mind 'wasting' one now and then. Not sure if there is someone invisible right there but you want to find out? breathe over there. At once per day it will probably wind up not getting used most days, for fear of needing it for something later.

anyway though, hopefully the original poster will come up with something he can live with without getting too many people here terribly upset..lol

See the D20 Modern SRD. It now includes Urban Arcana stuff, including a Shadowkind race called Dragonblooded.

As a direct result of that template I threw the half-dragon template right out of my campaign. It's really that good.

On second thought, since it's in the SRD I'll just post it here:

DRAGONBLOODED HUMAN
Size: Medium. Dragonblooded humans have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Ability Modifiers: +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, +2 Charisma.
Base Speed: 30 feet.
Natural Weapon (Claw): Dragonblooded humans may use their sharp claws to deal lethal (slashing) damage instead of nonlethal damage with an unarmed attack. Attacks made with natural weapons do not provoke attacks of opportunity. Feats such as Combat Martial Arts may increase the amount of damage dealt.
Low-Light Vision: Draconic humans can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. They retain the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
Darkvision: Dragonblooded humans can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and dragonblooded humans can function with no light at all.
Saving Throw Bonuses: Dragonblooded humans gain a +4 species bonus on saves against sleep and paralysis.
Skill Bonuses: Dragonblooded humans gain a +2 species bonus on Intimidate and Spot skill checks.
Bonus Feat: Dragonblooded humans receive either Archaic Weapons Proficiency or Simple Weapons Proficiency as a bonus feat.
Free Language Skills: Read/Write Draconic, Read/Write Language (any one), Speak Draconic, Speak Language (any one).
Other Languages: Any Shadow or Earth-based languages.
Level Adjustment: +1.

The claws do 1d4 damage. IMO this is probably worth LA +2. Archaic WP is the same thing as Martial WP.

This template looks pretty much like the Draconic template from the Draconomicon, mentioned above ;)

And it has no breath weapon as well. Guess that bad breath mojo is what the originial poster seems to be looking for as extra and what makes the difference between LA +1 and +2.

quarter dragon

As for a quarter dragon, I tryed this my self and found that the half dragon template with 3 levels is seemingly the best way to go - - take 1,2, or all 3 levels and call you self any fraction you care to. it is posted on the WotC web site under savage progerssions. this has been the best that I have found and not much too over or under powered for the LA.
