Quarterstaff Love, Heroic Feat and Power

Northern Guard

First Post
There are precious few, if any, powers or feats for quarterstaff wielders. So here is something I cooked up for one of my players (who REALLY, REALLY Wants a somewhat effective staff-wielding fighter).

Ironshod Fighter
Pre-requisite: Str 13, Wis 15
Benefit: You can use a quarterstaff as a polearm (Your weapon does not gain the reach property) this will allow your character to benefit from polearm feats and powers.

Should I even bother with a feat like this? Why not let staves have Reach?

Serpent Lunge, Fighter Utility 2
Ducking and weaving through the fray, your weapon strikes at the rear ranks of the enemy.
Encounter * Martial, Weapon
Requirement: Trained in Athletics or Acrobatics
Move Action Personal
Effect: Your weapon gains the Reach property for your next attack.
Weapon: If you’re wielding a staff or a spear, the effect lasts until the end of your next turn.

Constructive comments and feedback much appreicated.

yeah...absolutely none. not a one. between two books (PH and MP)...did I mention i'm playing a fighter mc with wizard staff wielding half-elf...fortunately my DM is kind and allows me to use any mace feat or power with the staff...

these are okay...though they do less to capitalize on the virtues of the staff and do more to make the staff act like other weapons...

I'm using the feat from dragon that lets a staff be a double weapon, while simultaneously not using any of the other double weapons. Defensive, off-hand, 1d8/1d8, there is a lot of goodies there.

"Forgotten Heroes" has at least 2 feats for staves if I remember rightly. One that improved the proficiency bonus to +3 and the damage to d10 and another that keeps the prof. bonus at 2 and makes the damge 2d6. The staff loses its weapon qualities.

The feat and utility are nice, and allow the staff to be more like other weapons. would certainly allow that as not too overpowered.

could be nice to have more quarterstaff flavor, for instance, the staff whirling like a propeller. the blocking parry, the spinning couterstrike. could be that you are looking for something a bit higher level, with enough oomph to be worth waiting for?

My first thought would be to allow the quarterstaff to be used as a double weapon, benefiting from two weapon defence and two weapon fighting.

My second thought would be to beg, steal* or borrow a copy of the wonderful 3e supplement "master of arms" by Second World Simulations.

You could use it as a foundation for a range of cool quarterstaff powers (an immovable rod powers, and rod of lordly might powers...)

* not really

Cheers

There's a feat that does just that in Dragon.

Staff Fighting
Prerequisite: Wis 13, proficient with a quarterstaff
Benefit: You can treat the quarterstaff as a double weapon. As a double weapon, the staff deals 1d8/1d8 damage and gains the defensive and offhand properties. For more on double weapons, see Adventurer’s Vault 10.
