Quasi-historical towns and shopping limits

The other thing I think about is that gold is currently worth US $1200/ounce, and 50 gp to 1 lb, so 50 gp = $19,200, so 1 gp = $384.

Note that gold is measured in troy ounces & pounds, at 12 oz per pound, not 16. And the troy lb is different from a regular lb. A troy oz is 31.1g, so a troy pound is 373.2 grams, while a regular lb is 453.6g.

A D&D lb is a regular pound, so at 50 coins per lb, each coin weighs about 9g. $1200/oz is about $38.58/g, so a gp is about $347.

Of course, I'm not sure the modern economy has much in common with a medieval economy, so I'm not sure how useful comparisons are. And in a world with all of D&D's trappings, I'm not sure how much it would have in common with a real medieval economy.
