Question about an Owl Familiar

As much as it pains me, I have to agree. :( Ithink they tried to balance the Ranger by giving them a win and bringing back the Russian Rocket Feat, but it may not have been enough. Time will tell.

Owls are still useful in that they give +2 to move silently checks
(very handy for the rogue/mage types) and with good Listen, Spot and Move Silently bonuses they make great scouts.

I agree.

I find the flying creatures to be very attractive familiars. The owl is the superior scout to the bat or raven.

Good skills will give the owl longetivity as a scout at higher levels. Keep in mind that tiny animals get a +8 to Hide, diminuitive animals get a +12. With a 17 Dex, owls have respectable inherent Hide skill so you don't have to rely on Invisibility spells.

The +2 to Move Silently is nothing to sneeze at. Even a less than stealthy wizard might find a small bonus useful when determining encounter distances.

Tangent: Where are these rules located? I know I've seen them, but I've had a heck of a time finding them.
