Question about Elven Chain

Land Outcast said:
Not sure, but isn't that required only for properties that coun as +x?
(I mean, shados is +2700gp(or something the like)

"Armor or a shield with a special ability must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus."

Shadows is a special ability.

On a related question I allow the upgrading of armors on logical progression -
Ie Chain shirt ->chain mail ->halfplate. This not addressed in rules.

The party found +1 elven chain and the player is inquiring about adding plates and spikes
1. would the new pieces require enchanting?
2. can non magical spikes be added to magical armor?
3. cost and armor check questions.
halfplate = 600 gp + 150 M.W. - chainmail (150) do the new plates require enchanting? do they need to be made of mithril?
the combination of mithril and steel would be 20lbs(chain) + 20 lbs (wt of 1/2 plate -chainmail) = 40 lbs ?
it would count as heavy armor, an the check penalty would be -2(mithril chain) - 2(difference between regular 1/2 plate and chainmail) = -4 to checks.

Some of this is HR, feel free to answer any questions you have seen rules for.
or just offer options.

The spikes can probably be added, but it'd be added as weapons, not as armor, I think.

I wouldn't require extra enchanting for the new pieces. The +1 part of +1 chain costs the same as the +1 part of +1 plate. So I'd rule that the enchantment carries over as long as the pieces were added by a master crafter...perhaps someone with Craft Magic Arms and Armour.

For spikes, what Jdvn1 said. They're weapons, not armour, so they get enchanted separately, if at all.

I hope not, that would make me 0 for 2 today. :(

But, thinking about it, it makes some sense. The price for shadow already includes the "non-standard 'slot'" price kick, so I assume that means it's not part of the progression from +1 to +10.
Actually, I believe the price 'kick' is due to Multiple Different Abilities, since that seems much more reasonable. This is because, like rings, armor and weapons don't have body slot affinities. Those are only for Wondrous Items.

The thing to remember when looking at "Elven Chain" is that it isn't. It is just Chain mail made from Mithral. There is nothing "Elven" about it. The whole name "Elven Chain" is just a throwback to previous editions when 100 years of craftsmanship meant more than just masterwork.

just a HR thought ... make different skills for smithing/working with special materials ... mithral, admantine, etc (maybe just pick certain ones).

then if you have 5 ranks in armorsmithing, weaponsmithing you can get a +2 snyergy bonus for each.

not that it'd help your case out.

new feat: Elf-craft: prereq: Elf (or half-elf) ... you get a +3 competency bonus when creating items that have 'elf' in the descriptor (not bane weapons though). (rough draft).

Heh, there's a reason it's still called Elven Chain! Have you looked at the time to create?

DC for Crafting armor is 10 + AC bonus. Chainmail has an AC bonus of 5, so the DC to create is 15. We'll assume that, since you can routinely craft masterwork items, you can hit a DC of 25 when taking 10. Thus, you can increase the DC of the chainmail to 25 in order to craft it faster. You must craft the masterwork component of the armor separately, which is 150gp.

The non-masterwork cost of Elven Chain is 4,000 gp, which is 40,000 sp. You make progress equal to your check times the DC in sp per week. At a check and DC of 25, you are making 625 sp of progress per week. This means that Elven Chain takes 64 weeks to create.

Then, you need to craft the masterwork component - 1,500 sp at DC 20. You make 500 sp of progress per week, so it takes an additional 3 weeks to craft.

Thus, a suit of Elven Chain takes 67 weeks to craft - or roughly one and a quarter years of 7 days a week, 8 hours a day of labor.

Only elves have that kind of time on their hands! :D
