D&D 5E Question about possession

I have a question about the ghost ability possession. In MM it says that while possessing, it cannot be targeted, unless by something like turn undead. Does that mean it is immune to all effects and damage until it is forced out? Or can it still take damage from things like area effect spells that don't need a target?

Thanks. I was thinking through whether there were any other comparable abilities to compare with - but alas, I couldn't think of any. I wonder if this would be DMs discretion when the MM is not explicit about something like this.

I would think that when compared to 3rd edition, it simulated Magic jar spell back then. Which made all sorts of shenanigans but basicly it was worded as: "your soul replaces the targets soul as the controlling party of the body." There it definately didn't make the ghost vulnerable to anything, as the spell was many times used by players as well and they always came out unscatched. As a sidenote, player's had the trouble of what to do with their vulnerable body while the soul was out there possessing stuff...
