Ho has to? Your average DM will say: "OK, since you have dealt enough nonlethal damage to knowck it out, you can keep on hitting it while you use your torch and lamp oil. It takes a couple of minutes, but at last he's a goner". That doesn't even take a minute of time from the gaming table.

If your DM insists on every single attack and damage roll, the problem doesn't lie with bad rules, but with a bad DM...

Is it THAT unbalancing to allow a non-fire/acid weapon do a coup de grace?

It is THAT implausible. If it can't hurt me, it can't kill me.
 

I've always allowed a flaming torch for the CdG. There comes a point where the troll is obviously defeated and the party can continue damaging it forever to keep it unconscious - so I just let them have it with a torch and then carry on to a bit of the game that they actually find fun. :)
