question about the new D&D minis

if i wanted say a bunch of kobolds to sent after my party...do i need to get a bunch of expansion boxes and hope I get them? or will they have like a kobold box that has like 20 or so in there? If it's the first I find that really annoying and is the main reason why I stopped playing collectible games (CCGs in particular). i hated spending a certain dollar amount (usually a lot of money) and getting nothing good.

Currently, at least, it is 100% pot luck.

There are rumours of this changing, but not any time real soon.

...yet another point in favour of counters and metal minis...

I have bought 3 expansion boxes and own 2 kobolds so far. If you intend to build a massive kobold army it might take awhile. They are one of my favorite minis though.

that's annoying

this ia really annoying...and probably why I'll not bother with these minis  ....counters for me

Since Kobolds are a "Common" model, if this goes like most other collectibles you'll see them pretty cheap on eBay soon enough. With the models coming out to about $1.25 each, I'd expect to see commons for 25 cents or less soon enough.

I agree. With CCGs the commons eventually become worth very little. Of course, for that to happen the game must be fairly popular, but I like the minis game all by itself.

We will have to wait longer than the day after release to truly understand how this will all play out though.

p.s. I'm glad I don't have too many kobolds. They're kobolds. They suck. They are 3 point fodder. I want them for D&D, but not really for my warbands.

This random factor is what's keeping me out as well.

I can get a pack of 5 differently posed and equipped Reaper Mini Kobolds for $6.39 at http://www.discounthobby.com .

With that, I can cheaply build a whole army of them, cheaper than trying to find them in random packs.

The same holds for any type of creature I come up with, and especially for PCs and major NPCs.

And If I don't want to paint them but want all the details to stand out, all I have to do is dip them in water thinned out black ink and let it dry -which will give me the effect you see in the shopping malls with those pewter figurines they try to charge so much for.

Nope, not a rumor, but an actual product. So far, there are two non-randomized products that have been announced. One is an Orc War Party(this one has Kobolds IIRC) and a Bandit War Party...

For more information about the game in general, and upcoming sets, see MerricB's website:

http://www.geocities.com/merricb/miniwpty.htm

The themed sets mentioned will consist of the following:

Orcish War Party
4 Kobold Warriors
1 Goblin Sneak
1 Ogre
3 Orc Archers
1 Orc Berserker
6 Orc Warriors.

Outlaw War Party
1 Cleric of Order
1 Dwarf Axefighter
1 Halfling Veteran
5 Man-at-Arms
3 Elf Archers
1 Wood Elf Skirmisher
2 Wolves
1 Human Wanderer
1 Owlbear

Retail is supposed to be US $19.99, due out in February 2004. You can check the WotC Product Library for more information.

I would imagine that if these non-random sets do well then more will follow. That is specualtion, of course.

Cheers :)

Hmmm, that Outlaw War Party seems a very weirdly mixed bag. Any theme? Any rationale? Or just a "kewl factor"?

At least I understand (in vague generalities) the Orcish War Party...
