Question about waking up

When your camp is attacked during rest periods, how do you determine if and how fast sleeping party members wake up? And if someone could post some stats for the ring of greater counterspelling from bastion of broken souls it would be appreciated. I already know it accepts 9th level spells and I just need the part starting with caster level.

Listen checks!

The DC varies with the noise- I usually assign a higher DC for sleeping characters than for those who are awake. The exact DC depends on circumstances.

YMMV.
 

It depends on their characters and the campeign.

Most of my campeigns require some rugged living and often camping in dangerous situations- I consider people who are used to living like that are pretty light sleepers.

If I was running a more cosmopolitan campeign, then I would probably not be as generous.

As always in GMing, much depends on the circumstances. As a rough guideline, IMC:-

Everyone wakes up when kicked, attacked, tripped over, or when their name is called out sharply or the alarm raised (usually in the form of other party members yelling).

During the surprise round, if any, everyone still sleeping gets a Listen check, usually at a -10 penalty.

Everyone who's still asleep after that wakes up during the surprise round, if any, otherwise during the first round of combat. (Naturally, there may be exceptions in the case of exceptionally silent attacks if the defenders are prevented from making noise.)

Thanks for the answers. But when a character wakes up, does he get to act immediately on his initiative, or does he lose a round or more catching up with the situation?
 

Well, the way I run it, a character who makes his listen check gets to roll for initiative at the end of the round and starts acting on their initiative in the new round. Of course, it often takes a round or more to draw a weapon, get up, etc. (Stand from prone: MEA, assuming loose blankets. Draw a weapon: MEA; quickdraw only applies if it's at hand, not stowed in your gear on the ground next to you or something.)

Spell casters are usually the most able to react quickly; they can cast from the ground if necessary, and don't usually have to muck around with the weapon drawing stuff. Though they need their component pouches for losts of the good stuff!
 

My DM uses Will checks for some reason... dont think its a good idea thou. Gets easier every round of course... but ...

We have had silly situations where one guy was sleeping thru 4 rounds of combat. Seems impossible to me. Someone can wake up and take a long time to react... thats fine... but not to sleep thru heavy combat.

Well, using a DC5 listen check, we had one pc we nicknamed "Sleepy McUseless" because he'd sleep through half the combat every time (overall listen was -1 or -2)...
