Question on Flame Blade...

Now for my question: does persistent spell say that you can't make effect spells persistent?

Oooh... as far as I can tell, it's perfectly legal.

It wasn't in 3E - the Range was Touch, and that was specifically disallowed by Persistent Spell.

I still think the coolest 3.5 spell for Persistent is Fear, though :)

I *really* hope they include persistent spell in the complete divine so that we can get it fixed up. That feat is far too effective for clerics to allow it to hang around without further attention.

You can only Sunder with a Slashing or Bludgeoning weapon; a Flame Blade deals fire damage, not slashing damage, so I'd be inclined to say no Sundering.
I'd allow it. It would suck at it though, since you halve energy damage to objects before applying hardness. It would have trouble affecting even wooden weapons (hardness 5 means you have to do at least 12 points of damage to affect it), and you could just forget about damaging a metal weapon (min 22 points to get through hardness 10).

Hmm...that makes a druid with sunder and Energy Substitution:Sonic even more interesting with this spell. Or use one of the UA druid variants like the one that gives up wild shape for Monk abilities....hmmm...

I have heard in a few places that the updated persistant spell is going to be in the Players Guide to Faerun.

That's a problem with Energy Substitution, not with Flame Blade itself.

IMO, changing damage to Sonic or Acid ought to be a lot more difficult than Fire, Cold or Electricity. The game is designed with the assumption that those two types generally do less damage, but is harder to defend against. Compare the number of monsters in the MM with Sonic resistance to the number with Fire resistance/immunity.

We've established that Power Attack wouldn't do you a lot of good with Flame Blade...but how about Weapon Finesse? After all, in 3.5, it applies to all light weapons, and immaterial beams of fire are pretty light....

I'd allow it, as well as pretty much any other touch attack.
