Question on Magic Item pricing

No, the elements are Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.

In the context of this thread, you're dead wrong. No disputing that. :) Besides, I knew what he was referring too. It was pretty obvious just by reading the starting post.

Acid, Cold, Electricity, Fire, and Sonic are five of the energy types, a category which also includes positive and negative energy.

Negative and positive energy are not elemental energy types. The thread is about elemental resistance, and that does not protect against positive or negative energy.

Resist Elements does not protect against elements, but against one of the five common energy types.

Right, and even though the original poster stated "elements", it should be fairly obvious as to what he was referring to. At least, it was to me anyway.

The spells are poorly named.

Nah. The first post was worded funky.

Oh, I'm going to dispute it :)

Given that his second post indicates that he knows what Elements are, but doesn't know what Endure Elements does, it apparently wasn't obvious to him.

Elemental Resistance protects against the five energy types Fire, Cold, Electricity, Acid, and Sonic. It has nothing to do with the elements (except in the overlapping case of Fire).

He was referring to energy types. He used the wrong term to describe them. Telling him that the wrong term is in fact correct does not help him.

The correct answer to "There are four elements, right? Earth, Air, Fire, Water?" is not "No, there are five." It's "Yes, but what you're really asking about is energy types."

No, the elements are Duct Tape, WD-40, Play-Doh, and Caffeine.

Duct Tape, to bind the universe together.
WD-40, to allow movement.
Play-Doh, to give it form,
and Caffeine, to give it purpose.

(A friend of mine in college wrote a big paper on this. Got an A out of it, too.)

And kreynolds, what I was asking about the pricing was, using those formulae wouldn't ER 5 to all five stats cost the same as ER 15 to one (9 times the cost of a single ER 5)? So the answer to the original post would be 16k, even before we got into that discussion about how multi-stat items should be priced. And I like the sliding scale you mention; what I've been doing has been more of a guesstimation method, but it has the same effect.

Thank you, Hypersmurf. This is absolutely the correct and diplomatic way of answering my question. This is the type of response I expected/hoped for from ENWorld - rather than the thinly-veiled condescension you might get from RPG.net.

I was just wondering where you got that 3000gp from. If, like most bonuses, the cost went as the square of the ability, then it would only be 1,778gp for ER 5. That'd give a "+5 to all 5 resists" ring the same cost as a "+15 to one resist" ring, 16kgp.

Oh, that! There was never a formula. It was a rough guestimate.
