Question on Pro Evil and Improved Trip

Thanks for the replies everyone.

One of the things that I was looking for was if anyone else recalls reading an article or FAQ or something that specified that Protection from Evil only protection from direct control powers, like Dominate or Majic Jar (like a Sage Advice, for example)? I am positive I read that somewhere, yet cannot find it :(

If someone with a whip and has Imp Trip uses his attack on a trip attempt on a AoO, and succeeds, does the free attack at the same AB as the AB made to use the trip?

You don't threaten with a whip, so the situation you present cannot occur without additional assumptions.

BTW If you fail your improved trip... you get tripped back. Just a little detail that is easy to oversee.

As he says, this is a good point which is often forgotten. Something which is also often overlooked is the fact that the +4 bonus from the feat applies only on the attempt "to trip your opponent", so you do not benefit from it on the counter-trip attempt.

Which is where the stability bonus of a dwarf can be useful for a trip-focused character.

Just to be clear, if you fail, they may attempt to trip you back. I think your statement could be interpreted as if you fail, you are now considered to be tripped. If its 50% they trip, 50% I trip I won't try it. But if its 50% they trip, 25% I trip, 25% nothing changes, then its a whole nother ball game.

Anyway, when considering the power of Imp Trip, I think its a must to take into account the need for the right conditions to occur. Something like Dodge or Weapon Focus are going to be used every round; there are a lot of targets you just aren't going to be able to try to trip safely. Usually size and Str go hand in hand meaning anything L or bigger is tough sledding. You'll have to wipe an Imp Trip player's drool off the battlemat should he encounter a throng of kobolds, but what does he do when he's facing a snake or gelatinous cube?

My current character is specializing for Trip and while it can be a very powerful tool, I haven't been able to use it a lot and I've had to make a lot of trade offs. I'm going into Dragon Disciple next level for the Str boost - the flipside is that I'll get iterative attacks later than a straight BAB build.

This last session I got to finally bust out the trip and put some Ogres on their backside - of course I was enlarged, raging and Bull's Strengthed at the time :)
