Question on some rules

Yup. That's why I edited my prior post.

But back to topic.... I had the player make a 6th level character, and we got to the point where he was "making" the weapon. He's using the dwarven metal from MoF (The stuff that does +1 Electrical and +1 Fire damage per hit) For his masterwork Rapier. I gave him a +2 limit on what bonuses could be used. So basically that stuck him with a +1 weapon, and a +1 ability since he didn't want a normal +2 weapon. When I got to the defender ability, I told him that would make a great ability combo with the wepaon material he's using. He could shunt the +1 to defense and still have a "+1" weapon to hit, and he would still get +2 to the damage roll (+1 fire & +1 electrical). And so the argument started.

Just be aware, Hizagkuur has been arratta'd -- it now costs double (+3000gp for weapons), since it GIVES double the benefits of the other "+1[element] damage" metals.

Otherwise, I agree with you.

However, if I were him, I'd consider an elemental bonus -- one that will (per the rules for Hizagkuur) stack with his sword's innate damage bonus.

So he could have a Hizagkuur Rapier +1 of Shock that is +1 to hit, and dealsdamage of: 1d6+1[physical]+1[fire]+(1d6+1)[electrical] ... or, to simplify things: 2d6+3, of which, 1 is [fire] and 1d6+1 is [electrical].

Still, IMO the BEST use for that other +1 is (pre-3.5 anyway) "Sure Striking". Penetrating DR is very important, especially for someone choosing the rapier (meaning, someone who's probably got more dexterity than strength ...).

Eventually, a Hizagkuur Rapier +1, Sure Striking, Flaming Burst, Shocking Burst, of Speed" could be fun to play with. 3d6+3 basic damage, more on a crit, goes through DR like it was +5, and an extra attack each round ... fun.

Eh?!?

Okay:

+1 market price for enhancement bonus of +1
+1 market price for Sure Striking
+2 market price for Shocking Burst
+2 market Price for Fiery Burst
+4 market price for Speed
-------------------------------------------------------------------
+10 market price.

So for the magic, it costs +200,000gp

Hizagkuur costs (post-errata) +3000gp, and counts as already masterwork (it's benefits are the +1[fire] and +1[shock] damage, INSTEAD of the +1 to hit).

So a Hizagkuur Rapier costs 3,020gp.

A +1 Hizagkuur Rapier of Sure Striking, Shocking Burst, Fiery Burst, and Speed costs 203,020gp.

You made TWO errors in pricing. One, you charged the 3,000gp for Hizagkuur AND the +300gp for Masterwork; read MoF page 177: it specifies that "Any item fashioned from one of the materials listed here is treated as a masterwork item" ...

Second, you threw in an extra +1 market price, kicking it into Epic pricing levels.

Overall, you overcharged by 2,230,300gp.

Um ... no offense, but ... I hope you don't work in accounting or banking. Or the IRS. *shudder*

I don't know which numbers are off here, but this really isn't necessary or even accurate. CRGreathouse has made enough correct calculations that the IRS would be happy to have 'im. Even if his numbers are off here, check out his various Generators. The man knows his numbers.

Reading this thread has brought a slightly different question to mind:

Sword +1, Defender.
If the +1 is in defense, is the weapon treated as +1 for purposes of bypassing DR?

Good question. My stance on it would be no, since your using the +1 for defense, the weapons magic bonus for attacking is +0. It would still have a non-magical +1 enhancment bonus to hit, but it would not bypass a +1 DR.
