Question: Open Office and Bookmarks

I am not that familiar with the bookmark functionality of a PDF. My question is about the PDF export utility of Open Office.

You can insert bookmarks into Open Office files, but when I export as a PDF, they just seem to work like regular hyperlinks. What more exciting thing might I be looking to do?

I'm of no help here, but if anyone has an answer I'll be mightly interested, too! I've run into the exact same limitation and am hoping it's just lack of expertise on my part.

OpenOffice bookmarks and PDF bookmarks appear to be two different things, which would explain this behavior.

After looking around a bit, it would seem that OpenOffice can generate PDF bookmarks based on the document outline assuming the document outline has been implemented properly (through paragraph styles, I take it). There may also be some settings to double-check in the PDF export dialog box.

Apparently, headings are the usual way to handle this. However, you can set an organization level for any paragraph. What I have not been able to figure it is if you can assign a new name to the bookmark, other than the formatted text.
