Question regarding Evasion

I would note, however, that you don't normally get a save for half damage from weapon attacks. Since you only get a saving throw because of a magic item donned, there's precedent for ruling that Evasion does not apply against it.

Just like you don't get Evasion/Improved Evasion with a Defensive Roll, because the Defensive Roll overrides the 'normal' situation (and IIRC it's spelled out that Defensive Roll doesn't work with Evasion for these reasons).

RAW? Yes, you would avoid damage. "Spirit" of the Evasion ability? That's debatable.

However, this is a very expensive item, so I guess it wouldn't be too outrageous to let it function that way. If it were in my game (not that I'd probably allow the item anyway), I might modify it so it's a Fort save rather than Ref.

Well, if you're the DM here you can pretty much nerf it anyway you desire (with or without a reason)... I don't think anyone is going to challenge it. If you want a RAW justification, this comes close (but still seems a bit off). The damage (and the save, technically) is still from the attack.

I believe the catch is in the wording of "against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save". One could argue that weapon attacks don't normally deal half damage on a successful save

Indeed. It is against the rules as they are written because As I said before i even looked on the boards, that it was not the attack that allowed the save so it wouldn't stack. The agurment against that is the magic item is giving the attack a save but its not, its giving You the save, so it should clearly not work. I don't understand the argument that are pro combo.

Yup - "Since this effect would not normally allow a character to make a Reflex save for half damage, the rogue’s evasion ability does not apply to the defensive roll."

Starmantle Cloak is much the same - a melee attack with a magic weapon would not normally allow a character to make a Reflex save for half damage, so by comparison with Defensive Roll, the rogue’s evasion ability should not apply to the Starmantle Cloak.
