Questionalbe Home-Brew Feat - Opinions Please.

Holy Evil

First Post
A friend of mine created this feat on the weekend to use for a new character he wants to play next campaign.

It doesn't seem to be all that effective, and more roleplaying, but it could be unbalanced, though i don't see that, though another member in our group said he thought it was, well, an unbalanced feat. The DM wants to think about it. I however think it's worth asking you lads (and laddess').

Arcane Gift
Prerequisite: Cha 13+, no arcane caster levels (bard, sorceror, wizard)
Benefit: You know 3 level 0 spells (cantrips) selected from the Sorceror/Wizard Spell list. (Eliminate these choices from Sorceror/Wizard List: 0 level Resistance, Acid Splash, Flare, Ray of Frost, Disrupt Undead, Arcane Mark. You can cast these spells as a sorceror up to 3 times a day. Your spell caster level is equal to a 1st Level Sorceror (no matter your class level).
Special: Must be taken at 1st Level. If any levels of an arcane caster are taken after this feat is selected you loss the benefit of this feat. This feat cannot be taken twice. No Metamagic feats gained through possessing Divine Spellcasting Class may be used when casting these cantrips.

Here's a suggestion: Instead of removing spells from the list, specify which spells are okay. The problem is that if you just remove the from the list, the player will be able to show up with the newest 3rd party book and pick the equivalent cantrip. If you limit it to specified 0-level spells, then he's got to come to you and ask for permission to take something from off the list.

Otherwise, I think it would be fine in a high-magic type game.

Ahhh, your right :heh:

Magical Training. Don't know how much i can say on the feat since it's not in SRD form or not, but it's prereqs and limits are much lighter (less) than the ones in "Arcane Gift", but the feat only gives you 3 spells which you can cast 1/day, as well as your caster level being equal to your character level. Thought you havn't actually said what you think of the feat Thanee :p

Goobermunch, i like the idea. I'm assuming my mate just means just the spells from the 3.5 Players Handbook, so i'll repost the feat as you say.

Arcane Gift
Prerequisite: Cha 13+, no arcane caster levels (bard, sorceror, wizard)
Benefit: You know 3 level 0 spells (cantrips) selected from the following list: Detect Poison, Detect Magic, Read Magic, Daze, Dancing Lights, Light, Ghost Sound, Touch of Fatigue, Mage Hand, Mending, Message, Open/Close, Prestidigitation
Special: Must be taken at 1st Level. If any levels of an arcane caster are taken after this feat is selected you loss the benefit of this feat. This feat cannot be taken twice. No Metamagic feats gained through possessing Divine Spellcasting Class may be used when casting these cantrips.

I think you can remove all the special restrictions after "Must be taken at 1st level". It's not like 1.) An arcane caster is going to bother to spend a feat on this or 2.) It would be overpowered if he did.

You don't need to specify that it can't be taken twice - that's the default for all feats. And obviously you can't use metamagic on them, since you don't have higher level slots.

Also, I wouldn't bother making it a prerequisite that you have no arcane levels.... like I said before, arcane casters get to cast these spells anyway, why would they bother with the feat? If they really want to take it, fine, but it's a waste.

All in all, it's a good feat for someone to fill out their background (I have a friend who always wants to take like one level of an arcane class, so he has a little access to spells... this would be perfect for him).
