Quick question about domination gaze

Three_Haligonians

First Post
Since a vampire's domination gaze is a supernatural ability it cannot be dispelled. Would Break Enchantment end the effect? Break Enchantment says "If the spell is one that cannot be dispelled by dispel magic, break enchantment works only if that spell is 5th level or lower".

We're currently in a gaming session, so any speedy replies would be much appreciated! :)

No, it would not.

Specifically, ""If the spell is one that cannot be dispelled by dispel magic, ..."

The vampire's Dominate gaze ability is not a spell, therefore, that particular sentence does not apply.

You can't dispel it, but you can suppress it with Protection from Evil.
Although, you might have to cast PfE before the dominate, I’m not 100% sure.

Reread the first paragraph and the first paragraph only. Nothing there limits it to spells. Heck, it even mentions a cursed item, which is clearly not a spell, not even a spell-like effect. The second paragraph (and I'm working from the SRD here), is above an beyond the first paragraph. I still say Yes and I firmly believe that the rules support that response.

I agree. Thus, use the first paragraph and you'll be okay. :)

Bestow Curse is what makes cursed items cursed and that's why it can be broken with Break Enchantment.

Edit: I stand corrected. From the SRD: Unless otherwise noted, a supernatural ability has an effective caster level equal to the creature’s Hit Dice. So, yes, I think that Break Enchantment would remove the Dominate effect based upon the first paragraph of the spell description.

I'm fairly sure this is untrue.

I admit, I was being too general. Look at all the specific cursed items listed here and you'll see a vast majority of them require bestow curse be cast into the item.

However, I think my statement should more accurately say "You cast a spell into the item to make it cursed, which is why it can be removed with break enchantment."

Well, that's what I get for assuming that the OP presented the relevant bits! :D

This spell frees victims from enchantments, transmutations, and curses. Break enchantment can reverse even an instantaneous effect. For each such effect, you make a caster level check (1d20 + caster level, maximum +15) against a DC of 11 + caster level of the effect. Success means that the creature is free of the spell, curse, or effect.

The DC to break a Vampire's Dominate ability is 23.
