my friend is playing a cleric, one of his at-will powers has radiant damge. I was wondering if that was like a type of element or something or if it was an area the attack hits. Also, my class says I am proficant in simple military melee, does that mean that I get the proficantcy bonus for all of the weapons in that group? Thanks again for any help.

Yes, radiant damage is like an elemental type damage (fire, cold, acid, poison, lightning, thunder, force, radiant, necromatntic.... i may be forgetting one or two). But, basically, it is just an element type of damage. some monsters have bonuses or penalties or take more or less damage from some elemental types of damage.. it depends on the monster.

proficncieny in simple military melee means yes when you use any of the weapons in that section grouping of you get the proficiency bonus to use it (yes, it is a large list).

radiant is a keyword that describes the type of damage the attack does. Many undead are vulnerable: radiant which means they will take extra damage on a radiant attack. On the other hand many angels are resistant radiant, meaning radiant attacks do less damage. Similar to elemental idea of fire doing more damage to ice creatures.

Simple, military, and superior are weapon levels if you will. Simple is the weakest, military is the middle, superior are the "best". Melee and ranged are also classifications of weapons. So for example,

Paladins are proficient (they gain the proficiency bonus) with
Simple melee, military melee, and simple ranged. This means they get the proficiency bonus described in the weapons section of the phb while using weapons under these classifications.
