Legend
One of my old players was free one evening when my group was going to be gaming, and she asked if she could play. I said sure, explained the setting (a [post]modern fantasy setting; the group was at the time exploring a haunted British isle), and had her make up a character. She was basically a British special ops soldier investigating the island, and we figured she would link up with the PCs and help them figure out the mystery.
I tell her that her character sees the PCs in the distance. She hides, watches from afar, and tries to decide if she trusts the group.
The PCs, meanwhile, continue on their own way, scouting the island, looking for clues. Eventually they run into a monster and kill it, all while the new character sits in the distance, taking notes and trying to decide what to do.
That went on the whole night. She was so into roleplaying her character as a cautious superspy soldier that she never let herself be seen. She still joked with the other players out of character, and we had a good time, but it was just damned amusing that she spent the entire evening making only Hide, Move Silently, Listen, and Spot checks. Finally, at the end of the evening, the group had solved the mystery and they headed out to a nearby island to fight the big bad.
I ask my friend what she wants to do. She replies, "Report to headquarters."
It was odd, but she enjoyed it.
