First time I ever saw death as a way to min/max a character.

Well its not technically a min/max... but dying and being raised twice helped my Dwarven Barbarian... how ?

Well my DM insists on us rolling how many hps we lost when we die and are raised. Twice I had rolled well going up and badly "going down" in hps. When I got those levels back through regular XP I rolled well again. Didn't gain that much hp to make dying twice worth while... but it certainly keeps my HP very close to maximum possible !

Example 7th lvl rolled 6 - 3 (died) + 7 = total gain from 6th to 7th lvl dying once = 10 ! (only the dice not Con) Never rolling higher than 7 ! Or gained HP when I first went back to 6th lvl.
