R2: Rats in a Maze [Manzanita judging]

Babette will jump in, trying to be a friendly face in the midst of all these accusations. "Now, Dak, we know there's some rats of some unusual nature involved in all of this, so don't be embarassed or afraid to tell us everything. We want to help sort all this out. If you tell us absolutely everything you know, and it helps us sort this mess out, we could drop your name with some rather well-off people here in town, maybe help you get a better job. But we could only do that if we completely trusted you, and, well, I kinda think you're holding something back."

Dak shifts in his seat as he turns his attention to Babette. "I'm not embarrassed, miss, I just don't see how I can help you with the rats. I'd be willing to keep my eyes & ears open for you, though, and pass on anything I learn of."
[sblock=Babette: ]You're not 100% positive, but you think some of Dak's movements are some sort of signal to somebody else in the tavern[/sblock]

Metrius nods at Dak's words, "Well it's good to hear that you'd be willing to help us if you do see anything. I can assure you that you would be rewarded for any information that you can bring to bear on this matter. Of course, we do not want to cause any further trouble for you if you were not involved. Tell me, do you have any contacts in the city, or know of anyone that might be able to help us further?"

At Metrius' comment, Babette watches Dak to see if he accidentally gives away his friend's position.[/sblock]

Dak gives a slight snort at Metrius' mention of reward. "Sure, I'll keep that in mind."

Dak looks around the room quietly, perhaps checking to see if anyone may be eavesdropping. He lowers his voice to respond. "This place isn't the best for discussing such matters."
Tor said:
Did Mr. Travers give you a big severance payment, Dak?
Dak gives Tor a quizzical look at this. "No, I didn't get any severance pay. Why?"
[sblock=Babette: ]When Dak looks around you see him give what you think is another signal in the same direction as before.[/sblock]
[sblock=Metrius: ]You can't be sure, but you think you might've seen Dak give some kind of signal when he looked around the room.[/sblock]

Tor's hard stare continues, and his tone is merciless and provocative.

"Hard luck for you. Losing a job unexpectedly. Being a farm hand doesn't pay that well to begin with, and it's hard to save money in such a post. No severance pay means any savings you might have would be desperately needed to provide food and shelter while new work was found."

"And yet here you are. You look splendid, Dak. A brand new outfit, if I'm not mistaken. Rich clothing. You're story doesn't add up, Dak. You're a liar, or to put it another way... I smell a rat."

ooc: Tor is intending to provoke an attack here. He's hoping Dak is a wererat personally, as well as an associate of wererats. If Dak is sufficiently angry, he may blow cover, transform and attack. That's the theory, anyway...

Gideon continues to stare daggers at Dak, but he remains silent in anticipation of how Dak will respond to Tor's line of questioning.

Leaning in, Babette adds, "Well, Dak, I think it's obvious that you and your friend are working for someone else. The question is are you part of the solution...or part of the problem?"
