R2: Rats in a Maze [Manzanita judging]

He lowers his voice to respond. "This place isn't the best for discussing such matters."]

Metrius nods, "I feared as much. Where would be a more comfortable place to discuss this then?"

With a thought, Metrius turns to Dak again, "You seem to have remarkable knowledge of the city for someone who's only been here for a week. How is it that you know the place so well?"

ooc: Well, we're not entirely consistent on how we're handling this. It'll be interesting to see how Dungannon resolves it. Gideon and Tor, perhaps due to our shared experience with Dak in the last adventure, seem to be on the same page at least. Or maybe it's just our Draconic heritage...

Dak sits quietly as Tor makes his accusations, silently but visibly fuming as Babette add her opinion on the matter. Only after Metrius tries to calm the situation down with his conciliatory manner does Dak respond.

"You people think you have everything all figured out, don't you? Well let me tell you something, you have no idea what's going on in Ravensdale. Not that one could blame you, being the outsiders you are, but bullheaded tactics are going to lead you nowhere. At least nowhere you want to go." The last line is uttered with a bitter smile on his face. The young man takes a drink before continuing.

Dak points at Tor, "You want to know how I can afford such fine clothing being nothing more than a poor farmhand." He turns his finger to Metrius, "You want to know how I know so much about Ravensdale. I'll answer both your questions since they're related. I know about this town because I was born here and I grew up here. My father worked out at the docks and made a decent living, at least until he was killed in an accident. My mother and were given a nice little sum from the shipping company he worked for since he died on the job and my uncle took care of us so we didn't have to fend for ourselves. That's right Tor. I have money. I bought these clothes when I returned to Ravensdale with my own savings. See, I didn't have to work as a farmhand, I chose to. I don't want to squander what I have like I've seen so many others do." He looks up just as another voice chimes in from behind the group.

"Well well well, what have we here? These friends of yours Dak? I didn't know you had any friends." The speaker is a tall, weasely looking individual about Dak's age though not as wellkept. He's sneering at Dak. Two others stand slightly behind him.

Dak frowns at the interruption. "What do you want, Otto, we're busy."

"Dak here was just explaining to us his high social status in Ravensdale society, and how it's not inconsistent with taking work as a farm hand." Tor mentions to Otto, just to see what kind of reaction he gets.

Intrigued by the appearance of Otto, Babette watches the ensuing conversation, hoping to find something that will confirm the theory that just popped into her head.

[sblock=Dungannon]Does it seem possible that Otto and friends are the people Dak was signaling earlier? Did they come from the direction Dak was looking at?[/sblock]

Metrius takes a deep breath, suspecting that there might be trouble with Otto, and keeps his hand close to his mace, prepared for the worst.

Gideon frowns at Dak's revelation as to the source of his wealth. He quietly closes his eyes and tries to calm himself so that he doesn't do anything rash. The leather of his gloves creaks in protest as he balls his hands into fists. He takes a few deep breaths, and then opens his eyes to look at Dak. He says nothing, waiting to see what reaction Otto takes to Tor's words.

Otto lets out a short laugh. "Hah! Yes, Dak is a man of many...talents, aren't you Dak?" Otto's gaze never leaves Dak.

"Don't you have someplace you're supposed to be, Otto? We're busy here." Dak's tone is terse, his face stern.

"What's the matter, Dak? Afraid someone might get the wrong impression about your new association with outsiders? Mercenaries in the employ of the Council, even?" Otto is completely ignoring the rest of the group, focusing all his attention on Dak. It's fairly obvious to everyone gathered that there's no love lost between the two young men.

Yes, Otto & company approached from the same direction that Dak signalled to earlier.[/sblock]

"Well, as much as we'd love to chat, friend Dak here is explaining some things to us. Unless you're the crook he was about to tell us about, I don't see any reason for you to interrupt. If you will excuse us for a few minutes, we'd be happy to talk to you once Dak here finishes his explanation."

I suppose it's just possible I was wrong about Dak, but I doubt it... either way, I bet some, maybe all of these idiots are wererats. If they'd be nice enough to lose their temper, we could settle this pretty quickly.

Tor grasps his chain tightly in both hands, ready should the occasion arise to womp somebody with it.

*sigh*

"Well, I for one, am getting tired of this dumbshow. I'm just gonna step out front for a couple minutes and get some fresh air.

Maybe, if I'm lucky, there'll be some night birds out tonight."

Babette will leave the table and go hang out in front of the inn, taking care not to stray too far away. If given the opportunity, once outside, she'll cast Mage Armor on herself. Then she waits.
