R2: Rats in a Maze [Manzanita judging]

Fimble McGee, Gnome Illusionist

Fimble has just been listening so far, trying to get a feel for who this Dak guy is. But just when he thought maybe he had a clue, a new variable (Otto) was added to the equation. And now Babette is leaving? Tactics are flying about, things are clearly about to happen. Fimble just doesn't know what. So he waits, in silence, hoping to figure it all out by observing, and praying that this tension doesn't turn into a fight.

Because if it does, Fimble isn't quite sure who to fire the first missile at.

Metrius tries to hide a look of suprise as Otto mentions that they are working for the council, clearly their cover has been blown and Otto must have been watching, or been told about them. Nervously he waits for the scene to play out, wary that a fight between them seems a distinct possibility.

Just to keep you all informed, as per my previous post (187), I fly to Japan tonight for 3 weeks. While I'm there, I may be online periodically, particularly for the first two weeks when I'm working rather than on holiday. I'll try to stay up to date and post when I can, but can you NPC Metrius for me, Dungannon, rather than holding things up if it's Metrius you're waiting for at any point?

Thanks

Otto takes in Tor's words, his eyes never leaving Dak. "You wouldn't be thinking of setting me up for something, would you Dak? Trying to lay blame on me for something? No, I think you're smarter than that Dak. I'll let you get back to your little chat now, but I'll be seeing you around. Good eve." With that Otto turns and heads out, his two companions in tow. Dak sits in silence, fairly quivering with anger.

[sblock=Babette: ]As you take in the night air from the sidewalk you see Otto and his two companions exit the building. Otto has a few words with the others and they hurry off toward the north. Otto takes a look around for a second before heading off toward the south.[/sblock]

Dak shakes his head and sighs. "You're not going to be satisfied until I'm dead, are you? Why should I help you? Why should I help the Council? They're the ones who're responsible! If they're hurt by what's happening, if they're suffering, then I say GOOD! THEY DESERVE IT!" Dak is screaming at the end, slamming his fist on the table. Several patrons are staring at your table now, trying to figure out in their minds what you're up to.

Dak puts his head between his hands, sitting silently for several moments. Finally he lifts his head and answers. His voice is subdued, his eyes remain downcast.

"A few years ago, when the 'legitimate' guilds decided to join together and eradicate the thieves' guild they removed the one true check on their power. Now their Council runs every aspect of life in Ravensdale. That pompous ass in the Lord's Manor sure doesn't have the guts to oppose them. So what's left? Someone was bound to come in and fill the void left when Black Jack and his band were removed. And the robberies are just a start. As the resistance grows, so will the scope of the actions."

Dak finally raises his eyes and stares at Tor. "Of course I won't be around to see it. If I stay in town, I'm a dead man. Thanks to you I have to leave my home. If I'm lucky, I may be able to return in a decade or two."

"Seems to me the way your fortunes are going, a certain amount of change in leadership in a certain organization would help you out. Tell us where to find them, and you're luck can take an upturn. You may be right as rain by the end of the week."

Dak stares at Tor, contemplating his words. "If I stay here, I'm a dead man. If I help you and you fail, I'm a dead man. My options aren't very appealing."
